View Full Version : Signature restricted ?

I am a new member and went to look for the signature section to add a couple of things like average , high game/series and equipment so that when I post the people reading it have some basic idea of the person making the comment. I can't even find an entry option for signature, does it not appear in the profile or setting for some reason ? Is it restricted until you've been a member or have X amount of posts ? Seems not allowing this feature would be a disservice to the other members to whom it might be valuable information about another member.

Thanks for the response, although not really an answer and
seems like a rather unfair comparison.
Why is a basic signature a big deal ? What is the purpose or strategy in requiring one to wait before being allowed a feature that
mostly provides usable information to the existing members ?

Seems a rather unwelcoming response to a basic question from a site self described as "Family Friendly Bowling Advice Forum Community "
Are you an Admin ?

Think you need to have 10 posts, not 100% on that.

Signature can be found by going to Settings at top right of page, then on left you will see Edit Signature in the My Settings portion.

I'm not an admin, I just tend to think things are set the way they are either by default, or because someone in the past may have abused the feature.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the signature because it's not really part of the post.

If you change your signature, and go back and look at previous posts which were made using a different signature, they appear with the new signature. Likewise if you remove your signature, it disappears from all your old posts.

Thanks, all I was looking for is information on the signature since I didn't see the option to enter it in the setting and also did not find information elsewhere in the FAQ.
I've found on some sites it's useless information and on others highly valuable to know the person's basic background and level on the given subject.

Well, to be fair from what it sounds like it doesn't even tell you why it is the way it is. So for all new members knows it could be that you need 100 posts for a signature, or maybe you need to participate in a thread somewhere that's not disclosed.

Probably a better option would be for everyone to have access to the "edit signature" area of the profile, but for people under a certain post count to have it grayed out and told that you need to achieve a certain amount of activity before being allowed to add a signature. Just to keep it from being a guessing game on how to actually unlock it.

The big deal is that it's a anti spam measure. There are alot of spammers that register just to spam the signature section. So requiring minimum number of posts helps stop it. It's not a uncommon thing either a lot of forums have limits.

There didn't use to be a minimum number of posts, but the spammers abused it. Adding the minimum stopped a lot and slowed down others.

It's like the limits on number and size of pictures in sigs, signature abuse can get bad, with people using huge photos 10-20-30 etc. lines of text in sigs.

You'd have a thread with only a few posts, but be pages long do to the massive signatures.

Yes there are some things that need fixing and updating in the faqs, but Idon't have the access to fix them. Some things got changed during some software updates and didn't get reset or went to default settings.

Right, it would be nice to have some info on it, even when I found the signature info in the FAQ when you click on it all it says is "Sorry, You are not permitted to have a signature"
Yes but when am I permitted and/ or why am I not permitted. It could have just as easily said Sorry you are not permitted to have a signature until ......

OK I can understand that, is the minimum number of posts 10 as one person suggested ?

You're almost to 10. Post again and try it to see if that opens it up.

I can certainly understand all of the measures needed to cut down on spam and abuse of all types that are detrimental to the general user population. To be fair my original question didn't have the "why is a big deal" question, that was added after the initial Willy Wonka response.

Just tried it, hit 10 and it does not appear that's the number.

10 was what it was, but I'm not sure anymore. There was a software update a while back that changed a bunch of settings.

And some people get it after ten and some didn't, which leads me to believe theres some setting in the user groups that need fixing.

I don't have the access to check or fix and the admin for the site don't really get under the hood to service the site. They lost their webmaster a while back.

Best you can do is wait till it opens.

Ok, thanks for your assistance, I tried logging out and back in and it has not taken effect yet. Will just check once in a while and see what happens.

As you get used to the forum, you will find more stuff that could be improved, but at this point, just enjoy your time here and interact with members. You will find out quickly how to deal with some and how to ignore others.

Really good group of folks here.

Enjoy and most of all welcome.

It might be post count + account age. I'm just barely above you in post count but I'm able to add a signature. My account is also just over a month old, so that could be it also.

It just came on when I returned to the site, not sure of my number of posts, might just set the flag at 10 and it becomes active on a system update or something of the sort.

Yes, I understand, I did network hardware design for many years and there was always something in hardware or software that could be improved. I'm just looking to improve my game and knowledge of the game and help some others along the way. I enjoy bowling and hope to continue along for many years to come.
Thanks for the information and the welcome!

Okay I think I found it, looking through the old site news posts.

it was last set to 30 Posts

In order to reduce spam and signature abuse, the first 30 posts are like a try out session for you to see if you like the site. If so 29 posts go by fast. By just saying hello to a few people you will rack up 10 to 20 posts.

After that it is smooth sailing. You can use the chat system, have a signature, and more.

I had made 13 posts (I think) and had recently checked and signatures were not available then came back later and logged in and the option was available to add a signature, I figured the 10 post requirement was correct and at 10 you set the flag then at whatever point the system is set to run a file consolidation it recognizes the flag setting and activates the feature.
As you had indicated it's probably been changed over time via system updates, that could explain how it would get reset to a different setting / the default as system updates, restores or maintenance are done. Thanks for your assistance !

Okay glad it's going for you, I thought it had got changed back to 10 posts since that 30 post limit was used in the Signature Permissions section.

A lot of settings got reset to default setting back when they did one of the software updates.
