Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour Returns to Southern California for Denny’s Dick Weber Open
Seattle, Wash. - 1/30/2009
Defending champion Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, will head a field of the world’s best bowlers who will return to Southern California Feb. 3-8 for the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Denny’s Dick Weber Open at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, Calif.
Named in honor of one of the sport’s all-time greats, the tournament will feature a star-studded field including a number of competitors recently named to the list of the 50 greatest players in PBA history as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. Among players on that list who will compete in the Dick Weber Open are all-time PBA Tour titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr. (45 wins), Parker Bohn III, Norm Duke, Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones and Dick Weber’s son Pete. Also competing will be H&R Block Tournament of Champions winner Patrick Allen and Wes Malott, two of the hottest players in professional bowling.
The Denny’s Dick Weber Open has become the unofficial “fifth major” on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour schedule because it has an open qualifying format and it features the “traditional” format used in the PBA’s early years when Dick Weber was a dominant player. The format includes 15 games of qualifying with the top 24 advancing to three eight-game blocks of round-robin match play to determine the five-player stepladder final.
Last season, Scroggins broke an eight-match television losing streak and became the first No. 5 qualifier since Tommy Jones in 2005 to win a stepladder final from that position, defeating top-qualifier Chris Barnes, 226-171, for his fourth career title.
"Winning the Dick Weber Open was pivotal for me, not only for last year, but continuing into this season," Scroggins said. "It was definitely a great honor for me to win the Weber title, but to end my eight-game TV losing streak and beat the guys I had to beat to win (Pete Weber, Tommy Delutz Jr., Jack Jurek and Chris Barnes) was pretty amazing.
A member of the PBA and United States Bowling Congress Halls of Fame, Dick Weber amassed one of the greatest careers in the sport. He is ranked No. 3 on the PBA’s 50 Greatest list behind only Earl Anthony and Walter Ray Williams Jr. Weber’s 30 PBA Tour titles ranks sixth all-time and he was the only bowler to win a PBA title in six different decades.
