My shop owner wanted me to post this question on some message boards.

How many shop ops know/knew about the warranty notice changing for placement of the locator pin being at least one inch away from the gripping holes? This wasn't a widely discussed issue, well not in our area at least. After returning a ball to a distributor to be replaced, he received a notice saying the ball was out of warranty because the hole was too close to the pin..approx. 3/4 inch away.. when he contacted one of his reps he was told the check the box for warranty info..on this particular ball and box that came with it, there was nothing in the warranty about that stipulation.. So this had us going through a lot of ball boxes to see if we could figure out when this rule was put into place. We found a box with the same ball ordered a few months later that finally stated what our rep was talking about.

We were able to get the ball replaced because it seemed like the manufacturer hadn't cycled through the old warranty boxes after they made the changes.

The question is how many of you were made aware of this change? Apparently it was made awhile ago, but never brought to our attention as it seemed like the manufacturers expect us to read every box that comes out to make sure no changes have been made.

And what effects has it had on basic layouts for your customers? For him it seems he has been putting more balance holes to get to the legal amount of side weight.. for me I haven't had that problem yet but I haven't done "basic" layouts a lot as most of my core customers all have plans or their equipment so usually extra holes are a given in their layouts..

The one inch rule has been around a long time. If you would end up drilling part of the pin out just roll it into the hole and drill the whole pin out. this does not violate the warranty. I have had several cracked balls replaqced for customers where the pin was closer than one inch but the crack had nothing to do with the pin.

It's always something to minimize replacements under warranty. Can you se it now? "Your pin is only 63/64ths away from the hole, sorry."

Around here they have been putting the pin in the finger and drilling it out like stormed1 said on balls with the pin real close to the hole.
