Living in a cold winter climate where it's not uncommon for temps to go below zero, what effect does that have on balls left in cars? Can it damage the ball? How cold is too cold? Will it perform differently when cold?

Just wondered...

While you don't want extremes one way or the other, The main thing about temperature is you want to store balls at a constant temperature. It's the fluctuation , the going from back & forth between hot & cold that stress's the ball which could cause it to crack.

A cold ball will hook a fraction less till it warms up, Because it's harder when cold.

A plastic ball will crack quicker than reactive or urethane. I can show you 4 of them that my girlfriend uses as ornamentation in my yard. They've been out three years, and all of them have at least 1/2" cracks in them.

Plus, a cold ball can sweat while it's warming up, causing you all kinds of problems with your grip. If you can avoid leaving them out in the car, do so.

Thanks for the replies. It's as I suspected and just common sense. So I shouldn't put it on top of the wood stove either, huh?!

In case you wanted to see what leaving a bowling ball out can do. This is a little extreme.....

Probably generates a lot of friction that way

I've seen a ball crack after sitting next to a radiator, but yet again, it was a spare ball 15 plus years ago.
