I have an exaggerated first step. I cross my right foot over my left at least 2-3 boards vs just crossing in from of my left. I just started doing this about a month ago. And my bowling has been more and more consistent. So I'm not changing :)

This kind of forces my hips and leg out of the way and does make my arm swing in line with my head. I was actually fighting this motion. Prior to this was just doing the traditional tight rope walk but subconsciously my swing arm always felt like it had to swing to the right to avoid my leg/hip. So now with exaggerated crossover step my swing arm is actually freer and I get a lot more consistency with it.

I have been fighting the same issue on my five step approach (with the crossover). For me though it can force the swing to be too far from my body and I have a tendency to try and correct it on the upswing. I'm glad it works out for you 😋

Bill can attest to this as he took video of me and showed me this exact thing. For me I was crossing over like that on my first step. Then to compensate I was making a giant slide to the right to get back to where I was starting. I have fixed that somewhat by making sure to step in front instead of stepping over.
