First tournament ever. Me and my wife signed up as doubles.
It is 9 pin so definitely just for fun. My wife is the one that actually got me more interested in bowling when she bought me a pair of bowling shoes last year. Since then we have been "hooked" (pun inteded :))
$15/each person. 4 game set. I believe handicap is somewhere around 90% of 240. Apparently you can rebuy for $10 but will need new partner(s)
Looking at the previous tournament results first place got $600+ and goes down from there. Not bad I guess.
But first team had total pinfall count of 2484. So avg game for winning team was 310 each (2 bowlers, 4 games each. So divided 2,484 by 8)
That's crazy. Guessing they bowled 270-280 + handicap. But that's to be expected at 9 pin no tap I guess

Handicap plus 9-pin no tap?!?! The fact that a scratch bowler could shoot 300 (and should most times being 9-pin) and not be able to win is ridiculous,
I average 186. I would get 48 pins of handicap. My 9-pin shootout league (on burn) I averaged 270. How is it fair that a 240 bowler can throw a PERFECT game and still lose?

I'm guessing scratch bowlers wouldn't waste their time with this tournament. Although money is decent.

Gotta go with Bill on this one. The last time I bowled a handicap no-tap tournament, I shot 300 and lost to a 316! Really?

My Tuesday house does a 9-pin no tap tournament every month. You would be surprised at how many scratch bowlers get in on that. Top score is 300 including handicap.
There is even pots for someone who bowls a 900.
I haven't bowled in them as it is always on a weekend where I have something else going on.

I've never, and will never, do a no-tap tournament.
One local house has several of them.....but I just can't do it.

No, that's exactly the kind of tournament high average/scratch bowlers want to get in. Because they automatically assume they are going to dominate, shoot 900 and win. They know it's handicap going in and if there's money in it, it won't stop them.
Then when they don't win, they complain about the handicap not being fair and sandbaggers.

Well this is my first foray into tournament format. I'm going in with a "let's have fun" approach. We'll see how it goes. At $15/person I'm not breaking the bank.

So you can rebuy and play as many times as you want ($10). Checking last month's results looks like one guy Jim Fay got into the money 5-6 times
Good day for him

Looks like he doubled up several times with other bowlers. So yes, paying $10 to pair up with other bowlers can be done.

Was a fun tournament. Good turn out. Signed up for handicap brackets (games 2-4) but bad third game did me in.
Scratch Scores (My handicap was 45 pins):
228, 264, 157, 202 = 851 (total dud third game)
Apparently how it works as far as "doubling" up is concerned is you pay $15/each for you and a partner. If you want to double up with anyone else it's another $10. So you could literally double up with half the house if you were so inclined. That is why on the final standings sheet from my post #9 one guy was up there 5-6 times because he had a very good game and partnered up with other good players.
I'm definitely new to bowling as this tournament format was all new to me. Heck, I didn't know that the "9" in 9-Pin format only applied to the first ball. I thought if you left a 7-10 split all you needed was to get only one and it would count as a spare (thinking you get two balls to knock down 9 pins). Good thing I asked around before we started :)
Was fun, will try again.
