View Full Version : Finally bowled well in league

After 7 weeks of mediocre bowling, I threw three 200+ games. I even had the front 7 in game one before tugging one thru the nose. Only shot 657 but that's over my 204 average so I'm happy. Strange night for weather as the humidity kept climbing and by game three I had to make a ball change to have a thumbhole I could get out of. People were sticking to the approach, sweating, and complaining of the sauna.
I pounded the pocket tonite. In another house I would have shot 700+ easy. This place is stingy with those scores. I missed the pocket twice, getting splits twice. Plus a pocket 7-10, but that's normal for me to leave one a night. We have three more weeks, then tournament night.

Sounds like uncomfortable conditions.

It was sticky. I hated to change balls but they were the same model, just drilled differently. After a minor adjustment I salvaged the third game. Just hope I can finish the season strong. Would like to get another 300 in that league.

Original wood lanes and approaches from 1962.

Glad I got one good series in. Absolutely pounded the pocket tonite. Missed the pocket once in games one and three. Flushed every shot in game two. 594 series. Ringing 10's, flat 10's, solid 7's. No one in the league shot over 700 tonite. Brutal conditions.

One open in games one and three on splits. Clean game two. Made my spares. Had a run of 6 straight 10 pins in game three. Used three different balls and made subtle moves. Tough house. Wasn't a single messenger from either team. Pins were D. O. A. all night.

This sounds like a carbon copy of my Wednesday night this week.

I shot 621 with a high of 230--not bad, but a break here or there would've met 650+.

I don't know if it was the cold weather or a change in the pattern. The last two months the lanes were drier than a popcorn fart. I even had another shiny ball punched up to just combat the lanes. I started with that ball but after one split and 5 ten pins, I switched balls to one that flips, and did a bit better carrying the corner pins but not much better.
Game three I went with shiny and pin down to get the ball to react early then hold after the pattern started breaking down. Another long string of ten pins. I was happy with the way I was throwing the ball. My follow through is getting stronger and I'm posting my shot again. But getting carry there is so tough.

Tonite was our last night that counts. Next week is blind-doubles and championship roll-offs. I pounded the pocket harder than last week and have nothing to show for it. I had two opens on splits the first game, including the pocket 7-10 in the tenth. Clean game the 2nd game and only shoot 208 with nothing lower than a 9 count. One double and 6 ten pins. Clean in game three until the 9th with a split, struck out the tenth to shoot 599 for series.
I missed the pocket 5 times all night and three were for splits. Game two was a no-tap 300. I had the second highest series on our pair. Tops was 624. Place has been really tough the last two weeks. I've thrown almost every ball I own and just can't carry the 10 pin. BUT! I picked up every single one. I made all my spares tonite. 594 last week, 599 this week and I'm in the pocket consistently. I'll get em next year I guess.

Amen, foreverincamo!

All in all, not bad shooting though.

At least you didn't need a 4-bagger to get into the 180s like I did at states.

If all else fails buy a new ball. Thats my motto lol.

I'm cashing in my change to get another ball drilled. Then I'm taking the $$ from league and buying a nice ball spinner.

That is one thing ive always wanted is a ball spinner. Were are you getting it from? How much do they cost?

Check out www.vertexbowling.com. They have a 1/2 horsepower spinner for the cost of others that are are 1/3 or 1/4 HP. Little over $200

I have one of the 1/3 hp Vertex ball spinners and it has paid for itself
with what I have saved on the pro shop ball spinner charges and what
I've made with it doing other bowlers ball refinishing and cleaning and
polishing.

Even though it is only the 1/3 hp model I've never been able to make
it bog down no matter how much pressure I put on it all it does is it
keeps on going like normal.

Maybe added a few dollars to the spinner fund tonite. After two weeks of killing the pocket and getting next to nothing, I broke thru with a 703 and 762 with handicap. We did blind-doubles tonite so they will draw names tonite and let us know next week at the banquet. Hopefully get paired with someone who did well.

I'm sure a 1/3 HP motor is good enough, but if I can get a 1/2 HP for the same price, I'm going with it. I just have too many balls and too much money invested to not take care of the surface of said equipment. Add some $$ for pads and polishes, and it's all good.

And that 703 was with two splits in each game ! Two pocket 7-10's in game one, two 2-10's in game two after a bad ball change. 2-10, 3-10 in game three. Strikes or nothing tonite.

The 1/2 hp model is $25.00 more than the 1/3 hp model so I guess it is worth it
and if you opt for the 1/2 hp Ball Spinner with Starter Kit for an extra $20.00 more
than the spinner alone you will get the starter kit which consists of this

Surface Starter Kit
(6) Wet/Dry Sandpaper, packages of 5 pieces each in the following grits: 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, & 1200
(2) Scotch Brite Hand Pads - Gray and Maroon
(1) 8 oz. Vise Compound
(1) 8 oz. Vise Polish
(1) 8 oz. Vise Slip Agent
(1) 8 oz. Vise Ball Cleaner
(1) Towel

The 8oz bottles are pretty good in size and I'm still using the ones I got from 2014 when I bought
my spinner even after all the bowling balls that I've worked on.
One thing I would suggest getting along with the spinner is what they call the Flower Pot Splash Guard
unless you don't care about all the splash getting all over you and the walls when sanding a ball.

I should have clarified that the Vertex 1/2 HP spinner is the same price as other companies 1/3 HP spinners. The bowl isn't steel like some spinners but all the reviews I've heard have been good

I'm hoping I get enough money to get the spinner, pads from 380 to 4000 grit, and a couple different polishes. All my equipment needs resurfaced and it would cost the same to do it all at the pro shop as it would to buy the equipment.

Just got the 1/2 HP Vertex last week with the starter kit plus some other pads that dont come with the kit. Love it so far and will definitely same some money from having to go to the pro shop.
