View Full Version : AMF Get Your Gear League

All but one of the 6 AMF centers within 20 minutes of my house will be having this league starting sometime in May. It's $22 a week and at the end you get to choose 2 out of 4 balls. Hammer Scandal, DV8 Grudge, Track Paradox Pearl or Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone are the balls you can choose from. This seems like a good deal so I'm in. Anyone else gonna be bowling in this league this summer?

Wow! Sounds like a great deal. On occasion there is a league at one center that offers a ball. This summer I'm passing on the sport shot league which is 10 minutes from me and just doing a house shot summer league that is about 20-25 minutes from me. Last week bowled there for first time and did pretty well. Should be fun.

My house is a Brunswick Zone which is technically an AMF house and they are having this same league. $22 for only 16 weeks and you get 2 balls. I'm very tempted to do it but I keep telling myself, I don't need any more bowling balls.

That's a sweet deal. I was pretty stoked about the league I signed up for this summer that gives you one ball (any one they carry) for $20/week X 15 weeks but this looks very tempting...

I'd prefer your league since I favor Storm and Roto grip balls but since that league isn't offered around here this one will by my summer league. I just read reviews on all 4 offered balls and they were pretty good for the 2 I'm gonna choose.

Start May 15th. Was told 2 man teams and a quick league meeting half hour before on first night.

It's only a good deal if you walk away with the Paradox Pearl and the Scandal. The leagues run for 16 weeks for a grand total of $352. The Scandal costs around $170 and the Paradox Pearl runs at around $165. The Grudge is around $154 and the Danger Zone is around $120. Do they offer drilling with the bowling balls as well? As far as I know, I'm doing a trio league this summer with a tournament included for the top third of the league with a prize fund of $10000. I'm interested though if your center includes drilling as an included option with those bowling balls. If so, then it would be a little better offer.

I spoke with my center about it yesterday and does not include drilling. The 2 balls I would get are the Paradox Pearl and the Scandal.

My center has upped the weekly cost of this league to $26 which includes drilling of both balls. Still a good deal IMO.

I've worked out a deal here where I'm getting a Vintage Danger Zone and an Ultimate Nirvana.

I guess it depends on if you are a repeat customer of a good pro shop owner. I could get both of those bowling balls drilled, with grips and a thumb slug for far less than the $416 ($26 x 16 weeks) you'll be spending. I could probably get 3 bowling balls for that price (high end). $22/week would've been a decent deal. $26/week is way too much in my honest opinion.

Wow don't know what state you live in but here in NY prices are high. 3 out of 4 of the offered balls sell for over $200 including drilling but not including grips/slugs in the pro shops here.
For $26x16=$416 I will get 2 top shelf balls including drilling, 48 league games on fresh oil, and 32 FREE practice games. Pretty good deal to me.

The same two bowling balls drilled/ finger inserts/ thumb insert is $448.00 on bowlingball.com
so yeah it looks to be a pretty good deal considering you will be getting 2 balls 48 league
games and the free 32 practice games.
I just wish we had a deal like that around here.

Don't forget that you also get 3 games a week and the linage is typically around $10 per week. So that is $160 of bowling plus the $350 of bowling balls.

I live in IL. The pro shop I go to is great. The PSO has 3 shops, soon to be 2 since the other one is more of a satellite store. The guy operates his pro shops as more of a hobby, but he's been around for 10+ years and has been bowling for 4 times that number. He's in the USBC Hall of Fame in the county I bowl in, and always offers free lessons to all his customers. All his prices listed include grips and a thumb slug if you want it, and does the best work I've seen so far. I know because I've been to 2-3 other shops in the area, and the other bowlers in the leagues I bowl at have been to 5-6 others in the area. The PSO ALWAYS has the best prices around, normally $20-$30 less than the competition. He does such a good job that I've even seen people who move out of state pay for him to drill up new equipment once a year and either pick it up or have it shipped to them. Top notch guy. Really cares about his customers for sure.

Well, I started this league with my girlfriend last night. They said they had a lot of interest in the league and we were excited. I am excited about getting my hands on the Scandal and Grudge, but the league only had 6 people???? So its going to be a practice league for us and new lanes conditions, light oil and short pattern, hooks alot.

If it wasn't for the light oil, I'd say this was a Sport league.
And YES, that Grudge can go gutter to gutter on short patterns. It is a very hook heavy ball.
While I like the Grudge, just be happy you aren't using it on these short patterns! lol

Damn that sucks. My house is running this league on 2 nights one night is on a THS and the other night is on the USBC open pattern. Combined there are 19 teams competing so decent turn out.

We finally started the league this past Monday. Bad part about that is, since the summer leagues start in September, and the 4th of July and Labor day are both on Mondays, everyone has to fit in 4 weeks of pre-bowling between now and September 12th. UGH!!!

You don't have to do the pre-bowling but since you have to pay the full 16 weeks to get the balls you might as well get your games in.

You're right. Since the only thing we are playing for is the balls (and pride I suppose), there's no need to make-up the missed games, but I want to get my money's worth. The League was just poorly planned on the bowling center's part.

Also one is asymmetrical and the other is symmetrical, one is polished and the other isn't so it's a good combination. I thought more people would pick the Grudge though.

The Grudge is actually too much ball for a THS, mostly because it has a ton of hook to it.

I could probably get my speed up as well, but it would be limited for me. My shoulder issues prevent me from doing a lot of things I'd like to, and doing too much with a ball is one of those things. Otherwise, I would probably get a Grudge as well.
But, since I now have a choice between the Grudge and Ultimate Nirvana, I'm going with the Ultimate Nirvana.
I hope all stays well with that Grudge! :)

Paid off this league as of last week. Going into the Pro Shop today to drop off my thumb slugs, grips, and my spec sheet so they can drill up my Paradox Pearl and Scandal. Looking forward to trying them out but honestly I can't imagine liking either more than my Phaze.

I wanted to trade in either ball for a Snap Lock but my PSO or the PSO that is drilling the balls wouldn't take either for trades. My PSO only sells Roto Grip and Storm ball so he didn't want the Paradox or Scandal. The PSO who is drilling the balls carries all brands but said he has had way to many requests to trade in the balls from this league and everyone wants Storm or Roto Grip balls. He doesn't want to have a bunch of Track and Hammer balls that aren't going to sell sitting around his shop.

I can understand that viewpoint especially if the PSO is at a center hosting the "Get Your Gear" League. Luckily my PSO is at another center and very easy to work with. He is always busy so he definitely would have no issue selling any balls. It was a straight up trade too.

For that you get:

32 free practice games
2 high performance balls

Yep, if you were going to buy the ball anyways might as well bowl in the league.
I pay $22/week for 16 weeks to get the two balls. So my out of pocket is $352. The two balls I got are $169 each. Total is $338.
So for $14 ($352-$338) I get exactly what ep1977 posted above:
48 league games (3/week) and 32 additional free practice games (2/week)
My league rate is $2.35/game. If I were to pay for the 48 league games my out of pocket would be $2.35 x 48 = $112.80 (we're not even talking about the 2 free games a week I get for being in a league.
And in my case I was able to switch out the balls for any other ball I wanted. Track Paradox Pearl for Snap Lock (even trade)

but never go down.

I'm sure most PSO would accept a Track Paradox Pearl or Hammer Scandal for urethane. You might even get drilling for free. You'll still be ahead.
But you can find cheap bowling balls. There are sites that have clearance all the time, especially with X-OUT balls (usually just extremely long or short pins)

Bowled my first games tonight with the new balls. It was a freshly oiled THS. First game with Paradox for a 214. First throw left a nasty split which I didn't convert. First game with Scandal for a 253. Strung 5 strikes together to end the game until my last ball was a 7 count.
First reaction is that I like both balls.
