I think I have determined that not all lane approaches are the same but are they the same in any respects? For instance at the house I generally bowl in my set up point is slightly behind the first row of dots as you look down the lane. In another house I have found that I need to move up two or three inches to get the same proficiency (hmm, can I use that word?), so my set up point is two inches or so in front of this first row of dots. Is this just a quirk or is it due to the fact that there is no real "set criteria" for the placement of these markers.

There is a "set criteria" for the placement of the markers, see the Equipment Spec. manual here:

Now lanes/approaches can be made of different materials wood, synthetic, which can affect your slide (part of the reason why they come out with shoe with interchangeable soles.)

Also depending on mfg and age differing styles, which markers are used might be different. Like some older houses will only have one line of 5 markers and newer one will have 2 lines of 7 markers.

But they will be at the proper distances from the foul line and on the same boards, like the center dot is always on 20.

The thing to realize is, that not all houses play the same. You can't necessarily stand in the exact same place at every house you go to, just like you can't necessarily play the same line on the lanes at every place.
