Seeing all of that open space to the left and right make my ball either skid
in the oil or not get over there.

5 pin should be the easiest single pin spare for both righties and lefties.

Throw the same line as your strike ball.

if you left a 5 pin the same ball you left it with should make it, the ball either deflected or went light Brooklyn, most of the time

Whatever you already use

would help to know what type of shot you throw, a straight ball non fingertip? a fingertip ball with some hook...etc... If you throw a light weight non hooking ball odds are you will hit the head pin and deflect and leave the 5 or the 5-8.

Lou, he throws a "chest pass" style 2 handed shot that goes mostly in the middle of the lane.

chest pass in the middle of the lane should get the 5 every time, also it will leave it a lot...

is not chest pass as ball is to the right of my body. it's spiral rugby throw with tons of revs

Try to find out your strike line move to the left 2 boards and go for your strike shot seems to work for me on a ths

I am curious on how you are leaving 5 pins if you have lot's of revs? Unless you are crossing over.

If you read all of his posts here and in the other forums (he's 2handedvolcano on ballreviews and BrunswickKing170 on bowlingcommunity)

you'll find he's using his "Rugby" style chest pass to throw a 9-10 pound plastic ball down the middle of the lane. The revs he may have on the ball are about meaningless.

See his video here https://vimeo.com/180988446

Because If that light ball goes left or right of the head pin just a little, it will deflect and that deflection will typically leave the 5 pin. Because the ball will not drive in to take out the 5 and the rest of pins will most likely get kicked out around it not into it.

ok now I see, I don't read other boards. and now kind of remember the video he posted a while back. Just didn't know it was a 10lb ball. My opinion hasn't changed though..just throw a strike ball at the 5

With all those 230s you claim to have a 5 pin shouldn't be a problem. Just throw your strike shot.

I do miss my share of spares but the 1,3,5,8 should be easier, I think they typically teach that you just throw your strike ball or if that's not working try moving a few boards left and throw a straight ball right down the middle of the oil.
The main reason I and probably a lot of other players miss easy spares is lack of focus / concentration.
If you hit the pocket 90% of the time how are you leaving 5 pins anyhow, usually when I leave one it's on a Brooklyn and I'll leave a 5 or 5,9 I believe.

He throws a 10lb plastic ball. It's deflecting past the 5 I'd think

I've seem some of the kids come in and play after leagues are over, they have to keep the lighter balls behind the counter because they try and throw them all the way down the lane, What idiots !

If you want to bowl get a real bowling ball not a plastic spare ball and get one of proper and reasonable weight, unless your a 80 to 100 lb 12 year old girl you should not be throwing a 9 or 10lb ball and calling it bowling. You can put all the revs on a plastic ball you want and you're doing little more than making it into a spinning top.

thats why I bowl 170 weekly

thats why I bowl 170 weekly

Why do you ask question on a site where many of the guys are experienced bowlers then when they make suggestions you say 'I bowled a 170, I have multiple 200 games or I hit the head pin 99% of the time".......

if you already know everything, and are a awesome bowler with no room for improvement, then why ask questions ?

Rattle me off the list of pro bowlers or even just high average weekly league bowlers that only use a plastic 9 or 10 lb ball ?

A few years ago I averages 114. I have gone up 60 pins. I'm so relieved. I might try a little stronger plastic ball with a pancake core soon and will post those results.

Or get a reactive ball

Instead if plastic why not an entry level reactive ball a tropical Breeze or a Cyclone 12lb ball, try to go to a ball demo day where they let you try different balls.

Looking at your league sheet and at your bowl.com listed average it says your averaging about 146-156.

A little stronger plastic ball with a pancake core???

The coverstock on plastic balls are basically all the same, they are made of polyester and a pancake core is basically the weakest core you can get.

If you wanted something stronger., You'd have to get at least a plastic ball with a more dynamic core than a pancake core.

But since all you use are 9-10lb balls it's unlikely you'll ever find one.

Finding a coach that can teach you the basics of bowling might be more helpful.

Sounds like the best idea right there, learning from a coach !

Getting rid of the chest pass would help immensely as well.

And as you said here and in prior threads, he needs to get a coach so that he can learn how to bowl. Whether it's the conventional style or the 2 handed style, he'll never be successful. (Remember that this is the same guy who insists that he will have a PBA card soon)

Plastic balls are for spares and plastic ball leagues (if there are any). And if he has any revs as he claims, then he won't be able to get more than an entry level ball because everything else will be much too strong for him.

Let us also try to consider the source as well.
