View Full Version : Possible reasons why a ball is rolling out?

Last night witnessed this phenomenon on one of our pair of lanes. Hit a spot down by breakpoint and ball rolls out, no hook. Tried multiple balls and almost same behavior. Tried other lane and hooks as expected.

Keep in mind this is probably one of the first times I have experienced roll out at this center.

So in general what are some reasons a ball starts rolling out before it hits the pins (usually means ball is skidding, hooking, etc too soon and/or too late?):

- Carrydown
- Dry lanes
- Ball surface
- Head oil
- Ball Core, RG, etc?

You tried multiple balls you said? what were the balls you tried?

I was ask a similar question two weeks ago. Well, the guy complained that his balls don't hook and leave corners. when I ask what balls he carried for this THS house with SPL surface - he being slightly rev dominant bowler, he mentioned 5 premium balls heavy oilers..... scandal, nano blah blah blah.....everything will hook at his feet. He thinks there's too much oil on the lanes. That's the reason he keeps buying strong bowls, I think.

Since it only happened on one of the two lanes, I have a hunch that what you were seeing had nothing to do with the ball rolling out, but had to do with the lane topography. If there is a crown at the breakpoint; a slightly raised area, the ball will actually start going downhill away from the pocket, and appear to straighten out. This is a lot more common than you might think.

If this was on freshly oiled lanes then I agree it's unlikely that it was rolling out but if it was not fresh then the one side could have had much more play than the other so that's a possibility. If it had happened a few time I would agree on topography but I have a hard time believing that he hit the same spot in the breakpoint multiple times with different balls. Not saying NTB is bad but that would be pretty amazing for a league bowler to hit the same board in his breakpoint with different balls? I've bowled enough sport patterns to know I'm not that accurate and by league bowler standards I'm not bad accuracy wise. If it was topography that must be one sick lane.

No, I am not that accurate and they were freshly oiled lanes.
