2 years ago you helped me get back into bowling by recommending a few balls & I chose the Storm Hy-Road Solid & still use it today. A great ball & I need advice again. I've only bowled for about a year of that time because of an injury. I'm a 73 yr. old male, 5'9" 165 lbs. My Hy Road is 14lbs. Was not drilled for the most hook & my ball speed is bet. 14-15. I'm told I'm a tweener & the oil pattern on my ball with the fingers on top & thumb on bottom, starts an inch or 2 left of the thumb & has about 6 rings of oil or so. The conditions are med. oil & I bowl in 2 leagues which are usually oiled just before we bowl. I purchased a plastic ball for most spares. My averages are in the 160's to 170's.
I would like to buy a ball to give me more hook because there are many times I think I need it. I would have it drilled for more hook potential. Any suggestions? I would also like to avoid balls that are difficult to control or is that part of the equation if I want more hook? Thanks again.

There are a lot of balls that can have tremendous hook to them. But the ones that have the biggest hook is the Brunswick Absolute Nirvana, and DV8's Grudge, and depending on the drilling layout, they are both very controlable.

Right behind them would be the Ultimate Nirvana and the Vandal Smash.

I can't speak about other manufacturers because I cannot use anything besides Brunswick, DV8 & Radical.

Lots of choices out there. Currently I have a Motiv Trident and a Roto Grip No Rules in the bag. Like them both, but the No Rules is a little touchy on medium conditions. On a fresh shot with a fair amount of volume it is on fire. The Motiv Trident I really love. It is very predictable and can throw on about anything. It really excels on a medium/heavy condition, but I can adjust my lines and play in lighter conditions without fear of it burning up on the back end. All the looks I've had with this ball have been atleast good if not great.
The Storm Code Black is another consideration. I have not thrown it, but it is very popular here and people have had great success with it on house shots and have yet to hear anyone have anything bad to say about it.

I posted this for another guy on here. I'm the 2nd guy in the black shirt. You can see the reaction and shape down lane playing 2 slightly different lines. One out to the ditch and one more straight up the boards. Hope this helps.

I just picked up the C300 tyrant for this very reason. I felt like I needed more movement on the fresh, I bowl on a modified shot and it was the perfect choice. Got it drilled to have a mid lane read, but I also throw 15lbs between 18-19mph. To be honest, there are multiple choices between motiv, C300, storm, ebonite, it's a take your pick kind of thing. You can use the compare tool, option thing on bowlingball.com also to help. ----side note ---There was a bowler, here on the boards, who experimented with different bowling balls and surfaces. According to him, it comes down to the coverstock of the ball and the layout out, meaning 2 different balls could potentially react the same , i.e. both shiny or both dull same with the same layout. The difference comes in how the ball hits the pins for you.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm checking them out now. KYDave...Thanks for the video, was that the Trident?
Someone recommended the Ebonite Gamebreaker 2 Phenon. Any one familiar with it?

It sounds like you're doing pretty well with the Hy-Road solid. Depending how and where you roll your ball its sanded cover may be burning up a little. There are two other Hy-Roads available. There's the original Hy-Road with its hybrid coverstock and the Hy-Road pearl with its pearl coverstock. Both of these balls are still available from Storm and the finish is what they call 1500 grit polished. It's probably more like 5000 grit as compared to the Abralon pads. I have the original Hy-Road and apparently it is the best selling ball for Storm. The Code Black has the same cover as the Hy-Road original but its an asymmetric ball which tends to make it move a little stronger on the backend and it has their 1500 grit finish, too. It's the top of the line ball for Storm. Good luck...

Yes I was throwing the Trident (black shirt). My buddy with the red shirt at the start of the video was throwing the Motiv Covert Revolt.

Edit: My mistake. the GB2 phenom pearl is the new release. The solid version has been out 6 months now. Either way, not much experience with that series.

KYDave,
Thanks. Do you think the trident would be OK for med. oil & my ball speed of 14-15?

Yes I believe so. You can adjust the coverstock surface to fine tune it in for you. And if it seems to get too aggressive later in the game you could always then switch back to the Hyroad. Mine is drilled with the pin above the bridge and mass bias just outside the thumb for reference. Your pro shop should be able to adjust the drilling for your style to get what you want out of it.

Here is another video for you. Wayne throws at 14mph and this is on a 41' "typical house shot"

If you like the hy-road, I think you'll like the new product storm is coming out with in the Timeless. Same surface as the hyroad, only at a 2-1 pearl to solid ratio. It features the dual-drive core which is basically a core inside of a core. It looks pretty crazy. It releases on valentines day. Looks great being thrown by both high-rev players as well as lower rev players. Check it out.

I recently drilled up a radical fix. Very controllable and easy to find a good pocket hit. I throw mostly radical myself. The new radical cash coming out this month is supposed to be a good hooking ball. Supposedly broke the hook potential record.

Thanks for the new replies. I will check them out too. I'm in no hurry to choose.
