View Full Version : Summer league, are you in one or taking the summer off.
After many years of taking the summer off I am going to bowl this summer
a 13 week pro shop league at a center I've never bowled at.
for 10.00 a week plus lineage of 9.00 you can get a Storm Timeless, Code Black or any one of a couple dozen other balls.
some down to 5.00 a week Hustle Pitch Black, seems like a pretty good deal, includes drilling, grips, and thumb slug.
Yes it's a sanctioned league handicap 100% of 220.

No summer leagues for me this year. Rehabbing the knee, and when the doc gives the OK I'll be practicing to get ready for the 17-18 season.

I feel for you, that was me last year but with a less serious injury, had carpal tunnel surgery at the end of the season and recovery during the summer. I hear the knee therapy can be a bear, but everyone I know that's been started on it early, and worked hard at it was rewarded with a great improvement in knee function and elimination of most or all of the pain. Good Luck !

i'm doing a 9 week have-a-ball league this summer. I will probably let my son bowl a few weeks for me (if I can get him up LOL) as he has not bowled for 2 seasons due to work. He's rejoining my Wednesday team next season and i would like him to be less "rusty"

I haven't signed up yet. Missed the end of the regular season with a pinched nerve.

I'm not sure on leagues yet or not. There is a doubles summer challenge league here this year, $15 a week for 10 weeks, kegel challenge patterns. Might bowl it, might not. Was debating on bowling some of the abt stuff in SLC this summer, but after seeing the amount of handicap at the last one I bowled, I might just say screw it and practice this summer

Thank you sir :)
The exercises I do on my own aren't bad at all. But when they take hold of the leg and bend you in each direction, that's when it becomes a real sob! lol
While I am certainly improving, it's going a little slower than expected. Unusual tightness in the muscles and around the knee, and scar tissue is what's made for the slow progress.
But as I've said before, I'm not in any rush and there's no reason to believe that I won't be ready for 17-18.

Yep, I'm doing a competitive doubles league. Last year there were 45 teams, pretty good competition and payouts. Wanting to spend more time outside this summer though and 1 is enough.

I always sit the summer out for leagues. I do a lot of travel for tournaments over the summer so I just get my games in that way.

I'm starting a 16 week sport shot doubles league next week. Will be a learning experience.

Joined a trios sport shot league on May 2. First league since moving to Colorado so I wasn't sure how the league was going to be. Good turn out and the lineage for 4 games is only $8.75, makes for a good prize fund. Just happy to be back in a league and since I haven't really bowled for a few months it was nice to heal up a bit.

I'm not sure what I'm doing. The center where I bowl still doesn't have a list of summer leagues up, and I just checked their website and its dormant. Giving the "your website is not active" message from bpaa web services. Not encouraging.

I was wondering about a couple of the local centers back in April when they didn't have the stuff up, this seems really late, maybe they don't bother with the web site and go just with facebook or even just flyer's posted at the center. The flyer's are the first thing with some of the places that are stuck in the past.

Since I'm moving from California to Iowa in the next couple weeks...I didn't join any summer leagues. I continue to sub in 2 summer leagues that started in late March.
The Fall/Winter league I have been subbing in is a longer league and sweeps in June. I think they have a summer league that runs June-November...but I won't be here for that.
Still have 1-2 more Wednesdays and 1-2 more Fridays before I move...then I'll spend the remainder of the summer scouting centers in the Des Moines area...get back into the swing of things and join 1-2 leagues when the fall season starts up out there.

Have you considered > http://restaurants.basspro.com/UncleBucksFishBowl/Altoona/Bowling.aspx
They have custom balls with fish, crabs, eels, and other sea creatures on them in an underwater themed bowling center .......J/K
Did Ice give up trying to get you to move to his area ?

I doubt thats a sanctioned center...so, no.
Ice has disappeared again...probably an alien abduction, hard to say.

I was just joking about the center, it could be interesting to visit some day.
I'm starting to lean toward a theory that Ice is a nursing home patient in the dementia wing, and gets his INTERNET privileges taken away for talking crazy, and other infractions.
Perhaps if the alien theory is correct you could use that to gain some low cost moving services. You could load everything in a POD or two and have them pick you up with instructions to drop you off in Iowa.
Sorry for the non bowling content.....
Two weeks into the summer league.
Bowling at a different house that I've never bowled at (other than a few practice games a couple of years ago).
Found I know a handful of guys in the league, a couple of guys from my Fri league.
According to them and some other regulars, this house typically runs about 10 pins higher in average from my other center.
After two weeks one of my teammates is 5 pins up / the other is 11 pins up / I am 20 pins up, but it's only been 2 weeks.
This league has no where near the same talent level of the other center as evidenced by the standings and stats
We are in first place and have a bunch of the high stats, that's not been typical the last few years in the other league although we did win that other league
5 years ago, but that was with a couple of different bowlers.
Time will tell how it ends up

Ah so you're moving from the land of Sun, Sand, and Surf to the land
of Corn, Soybeans, and Snow Shovels. LOL!!!!!!
Are you moving to Des Moines or to a surrounding area as there are
several centers up there to check out.
1st is Air Lanes Bowling Center (http://airlanesbowling.com/)
2nd is Plaza Lanes (http://plazalanesdm.com/)
3rd is Val Lanes Recreation Center (http://vallanes.com/)
4th is Bowlerama Lanes (http://www.bowleramalanes.com/)
5th is Merle Hay Lanes (http://www.merlehaylanes.com/)
6th is Great Escape -The Ultimate Experience (http://greatescapeiowa.com/) it is located in Pleasant Hill, IA a suburb of Des Moines
7th is Warrior Lanes (https://warriorlanes.com/) it is located in Waukee, IA another suburb of Des Moines

1st is Air Lanes Bowling Center (http://airlanesbowling.com/)
I'm considering this option. They have a PBA experience league. Not sure if I want to jump right into that...but it's certainly something I'm considering for summer 2018 or Fall/Winter 2018/2019.
2nd is Plaza Lanes (http://plazalanesdm.com/)
Same as above. They have a sport shot league that looks interesting...not right away, but maybe summer 2018 and/or 2018/2019 fall/winter. I'll be in West Des Moines and I think Air Lanes will be closer...but this is a nice back-up option.
3rd is Val Lanes Recreation Center (http://vallanes.com/)
This is the center I'm most interested in. They appear to have a few competitive, larger leagues and a nice website...seem to be more league friendly. I'll be checking out this center for certain.
4th is Bowlerama Lanes (http://www.bowleramalanes.com/)
This center is intriguing. Two of the higher average bowlers in the area bowl 1 or more leagues at this center...and both did quite well at the USBC Open. The only downside to this center is that it's on the wrong side of Des Moines and I might have to spend twice as much time getting there as I would some of the closer centers.
5th is Merle Hay Lanes (http://www.merlehaylanes.com/)
This is my back-up option should Val Lanes not turn out to my liking. Or, I may do a league here and one at Val Lanes just to get a feel for a couple different centers. I think it has at least one sizeable/competitive league worth joining.
6th is Great Escape -The Ultimate Experience (http://greatescapeiowa.com/) it is located in Pleasant Hill, IA a suburb of Des Moines
This one is quite a distance away given I'll be on the West side of Des Moines...probably not worth the drive on a weekly basis.
7th is Warrior Lanes (https://warriorlanes.com/) it is located in Waukee, IA another suburb of Des Moines
This center is by FAR the closest to my location...literally minutes away. Unfortunately, from what I've gathered from their website...this center doesn't take league bowling very seriously and has virtually no sizeable nor competitive leagues. Lots of youth bowling...and lots of "short season leagues" designed for less serious bowlers. If they had a league worth joining...and took league bowlers more seriously...it'd be a convenient center for me; unfortunately...that does not seem to be the case.
Are you from the area? Any recommendations/warnings?
I'm originally from the Detroit area...spent a lot of time in northern Michigan...a couple years in Illinois...so I'll be able to adapt to the climate. Probably will need to finally invest in proper shoe covers....once the snow comes...the common traffic areas can get quite wet from what I recall.

One other possibility to consider since you're going to be there pretty soon is stopping by a couple of the most desirable looking places and checking for vacant slots in the ongoing summer leagues, if it's like most places there could be a few teams here and there that are short a player, you could step in and get some first hand knowledge of the centers, lanes, and people before making selection for the long duration winter leagues. It seems like holding off from joining the sport shot and challenge leagues until you get settled and see how things are is a wise idea.

I seem to have a built in defense system against women of all diets...so I doubt that'll change when I reside in flyover country.
especially the GMO corn fed ones in that part of the country! You just might have missed out a chance in a life time! Running the 6 lane Classic Wood alley of Plattsburg Missouri!! I would have been willing to go partner with you! The cost to lease the whole ball of wax would be 300 a month divided by us. I know the two Great Guys that run it now are looking for someone local to carry the torch! They are getting up there in age, Chris 76, and Bob 83! They did ask if I was interested!
Another great thing about Plattsburg is that there is a School for The Blind Go-Go dancers right out of sight of town. Lots of college age women that don't have vision! Some GREAT bars their in town to pick up on some chicks that don't care what you look like, (if you know what I mean?)
How cool,,, (says Iceman), would it be to have the keys to your own bowling alley. I have the details if you think you might be interested.
Chicks love guys that have Wood!
Wood lanes are a chick magnet in Plattsburg, and the good part is that there is a huge shortage of men!
Anyway, good luck with your move to GMO LAND! Your moving form the radiations infested west coast, to the toxic GMO laced farm belt!
Think before you move to that part of this country!
Imagine Yourself running with complete control, Your own bowling lanes, to do with as you please. Only expense would be our rent, utilities, and insurance.
I picture you giving lessons to the many beautiful blind Go-Go Dancer students! MIGHT be WORTH a flight to Plattsburg, where you could land on the Air Port that doesn't exist! Then ride a donkey, (fastest means from airport), to the Garden of Eden, and the home of the best damn wood lanes West of CA!
THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Why does she have a fist in her mouth? Wait...maybe that's not a good question to ask as I imagine Bowl1820 already has his finger on the "CENSOR" button...
Also, very poorly dressed for outdoor field work. Sun exposure aside, you gotta guard against ticks.

In the future when you run across an attractive, scantily clad woman with a smile like that directed anywhere in your vicinity, you might consider alternative options to the observations you've posted.......perhaps you are creating your own defense system.

Did you finally have enough of Jerry Brown's Moonbeam paradise?
Thats a topic...I could spend a LONG time on...and derailing bowling discussions with politics gives my friend Bowl1820 heartburn...so...let's just say "politics" is one of the items on my list of "Things Aslan WON'T Miss About California"...right up there with traffic.
Granted...being a "moderate"...I doubt I'd appreciate Texas nor Utah either....and even Iowa might be a bit too far to the right for me. I certainly won't be able to smoke my medication in the Hawkeye State...which is a bummer.
