Just curious, what does it take to become a certified coach? Are there courses? Other requirements?

The link Bowl1820 attached is the link for it. Level 1 is just an online test and the reading material can be downloaded for that. Bronze and Silver the next 2 levels you have to take a course before you are allowed to take the test. Unless you are coaching full time and can get a waiver saying you are a full time coach, you have to wait 1 year between the bronze and silver test. I actually got my silver certification yesterday. I took the course in Aug and submitted my test on the 19th so it took about 3 weeks to get the results.

How extensive is the back ground check? I sure hope there is a really good one. Anyone who is around children should be required to have one. That should be required for anyone who has anything to do with a school or church.

Occasionaly USA BOWLING does one day, free, Level one clinics. I attended one in Port Jeff, L.I. after I had earned it on line. I definitely prefered it to the on line.

Congratulations on earning your Silver. I got mine back in January of this year. I waited so long for my results that I called USBC to make sure I hadn't missed an e-mail.

Thanks, Ron Hatfield who was the silver instructor did say be patient because Stephen Padilla is the only person grading the Silver Essays so it could take a while. Congrats to you too. Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet but I want my town's high school to start a bowling team so when my kids get into high school they have a team to bowl on. My town is the only town without a team, about 5 or 6 neighboring town has a team.

I shouldn't be hijacking this thread, but Ron was my instructor for both the bronze and silver. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had.

So far I'm just continuing to volunteer with the local youth league; a free hour and a half afternoon clinic with the lane time donated by Nutmeg Bowl, and the league itself Saturday morning with an hour of clinic after the three games. I'm thinking of trying to start a short term practice league for adults who really want to improve their games.

Good luck with starting a high school team.

The background check is extensive and must be updated regularly.

Every certified coach has to submit to a background check and renew it every 3 years. I have to renew mine in Nov and it's the standard background check, you submit your name address and social security and they look for criminal history and the like.

I thought it was every other year?

You're right. My mistake, I thought it was every 3. Or at least it seemed like I got my RVP 3 years ago. =P
