This is a neat concept, but in the end I'm just watching a robot roll the ball over and over. There's a real opportunity for education if they would spend some time when they make the moves and speed adjustments discussing what indicated a move was needed and how the move was determined.

After rolling a big 746 series in Week 3 of E.A.R.L.’s Journey to 900, E.A.R.L. is looking to keep his string of two straight 700’s going, with an eye on the prize, the 900 series. Will E.A.R.L. make the necessary adjustments to string together three straight 300 games? Watch the video and find out!

This week we actually left the surface alone from the previous week. It had three games of lane shine on it. The first week we were having trouble controlling the pocket in practice with the ball at 2000, so we hit it with 500 and were able to control the pocket. We had even more success in weeks 2 and 3 with the ball at 500 playing further left, but we left the surface alone and tried to play further right this week to increase the carry percentage.

Note:EARL is set to 350 rpm, ~17mph ball speed, 50 degrees of axis rotation and 10 degrees of axis tilt. The ball is a generic ASYM, solid reactive, low RG, High diff, drilled straight over the label, pin up, 5” from PAP.

I think most of what I am learning it that accuracy is not all that it takes to even bowl a 300 game. The fact people do it somewhat regularly speaks to how much we dynamically and unconsciously adjust. I am also becoming convinced that often a less than optimal rack will lead to a ten pin.
