So just how much of an effect does layout have? What IS hook? Here I'll discuss a couple of the biggest misconceptions in bowling: the actual effect of layout on reaction, and what hook really means instead of the conventionally accepted idea that hook=backend.

Great explanation! Years ago I wrote an article for BTM using the car analogy: the core is like the engine, and the cover is like the tires. I still see bowlers who buy a very early rolling (core and cover material) ball and polish it to get it to "go long." When asked I always respond, "If you put racing tires on a dump truck has it become a race car?" Of course not!
