View Full Version : Slide vs. Plant

I know the majority of bowlers out their slide with their lead foot upon release, but I am wondering if anyone else out there plants their foot, as I do. I have always done it as a form of leverage, and I could never see myself releasing the ball consistently while my lead foot is in motion. Once my foot is planted, I can really come through the ball during my release, and it has really benefitted me.

Does anyone else do this?

According to my coach, old school was to release while still sliding. Today's game, he said, requires the slide to end just before the release. This gives better leverage. I was one who released while sliding, but now, with a lot of work, the slide finishes just before release.

I always plant my foot, I can't slide, or I fall (not foot to head coordinated). I've gone halfway down the lane before, they had to re-oil the lane :)

Old school - lol. I like hearing that from others, everyone is going away from it, and I'm heading directly for it. But yes, I slide, not much, as the ball is released. This is never been an issue with me, the hand position of the release point was everywhere, side, top, bottom, behind, you name it, I created it. Those nights did make it easy though, I never had to move - not until I through the ball correctly two or three times in a row, which I recall I've had nights where I never moved. :D

Granted, planting gives your more leverage that the twisters need, but it is hard on the knees. It's fine if you're a young buck and throw the ball 19mph. I doubt if you'll be able to do that much past the age of 40.

Im young, but I could only bowl about 6-7 games in a row before my arm and knee just need a rest. The outside of my foot also tends to get very sore from the added pressure planting puts on it. I doubt I'll be cranking the ball when I am 40, so I may have to opt for the Norm Duke line, rather than playing in front of the ball return.

MOSTLY, aren't the ones who plant there feet crankers, all others( tweener, stroker, and the ones inbetween) slide. That simple planting can cause one to produce 350-400 rpm's, while us mere mortals produce 190-300 rpms. But the strokers & tweeners are more consistent.

i,m another one that plants instead of slides and like you i can get some good leverage on the ball upon release..

I plant but i am more of a tweener. I also have a slow approach so it won't hurt my knee so much.

It is probably also i have crappy shoes too and they don't slide to well. My coach has no issue with me not sliding so i am not going to change. I also have a 193 average in usbc league play so I guess it isn't to bad

nice vids allten, very solid at the line, decent follow through, good knee bend, and excellent background music. Didn't know the suace was that smooth a ball.

Yeah the sauce is a lot smoother than the usually hammer skid snap balls they produce. I can actually rev that ball up a lot more but the shot in the video didn't call for it. So I basicly let the ball take the work. Next time I go video I might put tape white tape on the top of my bowling ball near the fingers. I was told it is a good way to count the revs.

I love that sauce ball. I rolled it this past Thursday and won 17 - 0 with a 234,235, 207. I only have 5 more weeks to get my 200 ave so I can get my pba card but I might be running out of time.

Thanks again for the compliment.

Until recently I'd have said I was a planter, but I now realize that I do slide a very little bit. Just enough that I don't have any problems with my knee and can bowl until my right arm gets tired. After just six games my right arm usually calls it quitting time! If I was to totally plant I'd probably mess up my left knee. That never happens.

But i tend to plant my foot as well. I do have a little slide but whenever i try and slide my foot more it seems i end up naturally "halting" the motion and throws my balance off. I definitely dont slide alot and like mentioned, it feels really strange to release the ball while sliding for me as well.

Your style(technique) seems very similar to mine. One thing that lately has been bothering me is balance though. Not sure why. Maybe dipping my right shoulder too much or not keeping head straight. im going to video tape this weekend. Do you ever have balance issues. I also ask because like you i kick my leg up in the air vs sliding it back behind me on the floor.

hmm, on this note, I feel I am more of a planter...If I try to slide my foot, I seem to lose balance and fall forward a bit. :( I'll have to pay a little more attention next time Im at the lanes.

 omg!!!!!!! ..... -_-

I once bowled 22 games in an hour and a half to two hours, and at the time i shot my high game ever on that 22nd game.

The power game today almost requires planting your foot for leverage, however at my age my knee can't take the pounding. There is a tremendous amount of pressure put on your knee and hip when coming to sudden stop rather than sliding to a stop.

I learned to plant because of horrendous approaches. Never consistent and usually tackey. I can bowl in tennis shoes, but appease the bowling center and wear bowling shoes. Works fine for me...210 avg. Now, if I ever wanted to be a 230 avg bowler I could spend a solid year or 5 breaking my entire game down from scratch, including longer strides and a slide at the end of my approach, but hell, I'd be pushing 40 and probably ruin the fun of the game before I ever surpassed my current avg.

I learned if I slow my walk and everything else that goes with it, I don't slide hardly at all..
I got the ss8's too with max slide soles aswell.

I hate sticky aproches.........

I have been a "stroker" since I was able to slide...

How or what does it feel like?

DO you approach slower than normal?

Or do you go full force...? My anxiety is that I will fall abruptly and break my jaw??

How do I complete the change?? I want to throw 450 rpms with a 16 mph + ball...

Please help?

Aloha,

I have been taught by my coach to have the ball and ankle (left ankle as I am right handed bowler) be parallel to each other on my last step (four step approach I use) and find I slide naturally.
