Last night at our center we had live music followed by "Open Mic Night" comedy. I just had to mention to my boss that I've done open mic night in the past at a comedy club many years ago. I should have kept that to myself. I only did it a few times. The first time was completely on a dare when we went there one night to watch with friends. Next thing you know I was on stage. I actually did really well especially considering I didn't go there with the plan to actually be on stage. I had to improvisation everything.
I did well enough for the owner to talk to me after the show and ask if I'd be interested in returning on a regular basis. Apparently he was impressed. Since I was in the meat and potatoes point of my telecom career at the time, I had to decline. I did go back a couple other times just for the fun of it but not as a scheduled regular. Open mic was good enough. It is quite fun though. Probably not if you bomb it isn't but I did very well. As I said I mentioned this to the boss last night, next thing you know I found myself being called up on stage by the MC. HEY! I didn't see that on my work schedule nor job description!
I have to say it was very odd doing this not only at work in front of my co-workers but my wife and oldest son were up there while I did it. It was a pretty large crowd, I'd say about 120 people. Much bigger audience than the comedy club. As it turned out I killed it! Again I had to improvise everything which was surprisingly easy. It's sorta funny how you can turn your real life experiences into a comedy show. Unlike previous times which I was only on stage 10 minutes each, this time was 30! Somehow I kept spitting out material. It probably helped that I served the crowd a ton of booze prior to getting on stage.
The best thing about it was once I returned to the bar, the tips I got were crazy because of it. Even the emo girl in the audience I picked on for having bright blue lipstick. I asked her if she was really cold because her lips were so blue? Her face turned bright red so she let off a purple glow. I should have put her by the lanes, we could have saved money by using her instead of the cosmic lights. She tipped me $40 on her $30 tab. LOL Go figure. Now since that happened I'll have to pick on more audience members next time besides her and my boss.
It was cool having customers come up shaking my hand giving praise. A couple asked for an autograph but I declined on that. My autograph? Seriously people, I work at a bowling alley I'm not a celeberty? No thanks. They compromised though, they gave me their autographs instead. Although, it was just on their credit card receipt but I'm not picky.
The topper of the evening was my son's reaction. Not only was he laughing his butt off while I was up there but he said he was really proud of me. He couldn't believe his dad could get up and do something like that. I've told him about me doing it in the past before but I guess there is a difference between hearing about it and seeing. He couldn't believe how I came up with all that just spur of the moment. Wifey just shook her head when I got up there. After being together for over 2 decades there isn't anything I do that could surprise her anymore. My co-workers knew I was a goof but never pegged me to be a comic. None of them including my boss really expected it. Then again, neither did I. So I guess I have to add "comic" to my list of duties at work, boss said I WILL be doing it again. Who'd have thought? Especially since several jokes were insulting him, in fun of course (so he thought heehee). I think I should get a raise with this new duty! I certainly wasn't prepared for it but glad I did it.
