Anyone have any great suggestions/techniques for teaching your wife to bowl. She's right handed, ending on the right ...I know she could do better if she at least had a proper four step approach with a straight ball.

There are 112 USBC certified coaches in Missouri. Any of them should be qualified to teach your wife.

Two reasons why you probably shouldn’t try to teach her your self:
1. You may be a better than average bowler. This does not mean you will be a good coach.

2. When coaching a spouse or one of your children, there can be issues that are part of your relationship that can interfere with the coaching.

Wendy Macpherson told me years ago that you should never coach anyone you've ever seen naked. This includes both your spouse and yourself!

LMAO, very wise woman. Wait, I've seen myself naked! Does that mean I can't teach myself anything new?

Hmmm.....I'm seeing a new league idea here. Friday night nude bowl! It would have to be ladies only. I mean seriously, would you want to be on a naked league with men? That would be "The Viagra League". No thanks. Now, my wife naked throwing a bowling ball? I think I have to sleep on it to think that one through. When we got married it's a no brainer and definite yes. However, 19 years and 3 kids later....ummm?

In terms of bowling, yes! Trying to coach yourself is a really bad idea.

Especially when you have to demonstrate what to do next. People would think you were a few fries short of a happy meal. I'm starting to think that suicide bomber coaches have it much easier than coaching bowling. It would be a one quick lesson, all you'd say is "Pay attention everyone, I'm only going to show you this once" Class dismissed.

As far as the wife bowling naked, I'll decline on that. Too many awkward movements and there is some information I just have no need to know. Especially frame by frame video of it, EEK!

I would agree to find her a teacher. The only things I have taught my wife is how to do the small basics. Now she is moving up to learn from a coach.

In the past I have gotten certifications and have worked alongside a few other accomplished coaches. Through this experience this have overwhelmingly been a positive experience for myself and those I have worked with; that being said my wife started her first league this year and she is by far the most difficult person I have ever tried to coach (I say try because it was not that productive). When working with someone you are that close with I find it much better to have someone else coach and be there more as someone to help them understand what the coach is trying to say or assist the coach in knowing their learning style.

i got my wife her own ball and 2 private lessons. Then we went and bowled a game and she bowled a zero after 7 frames. She got mad and quit. she needs to be patient and that it takes practice. she doesn't like to lose and i told her you are not going to beat me just try and beat your own score. we haven't gone since but when our girls grow up i'm sure she'll try again.

After 14 straight gutter balls I think I would have quit too. Maybe you should have taken her bowling before spending money on a new ball. Then the coach could have told you to save your money.

Has your wife never bowled before? I'm surprised you couldn't even keep one ball on the lane, what did the coach work on with her?

Apparently her mind must have been in the gutter.

I watched her take the lessons. She learned a few things and showed improvement. Can't learn everything at once of course. She had only gone maybe once year or less before that in her life and she would just walk up and throw. For some reason after the lessons and we went she was releasing the ball so early it shot off into the gutter quickly.

I didn't marry a bowler. But that's okay

I'm guessing she was using a house ball? I would recommend getting her own ball before she takes lessons. It's tough to improve if you have a bad fitting ball.

No I thought getting her fitted for a ball would help. It will if she practiced. She needs to find her rhythm

Facing the same situation. She refuses to adjust anything.

Her current swing is 3 steps, drop the ball, throw on the 5th step. No shoulder drop, no slide, hanging on top of the ball.

It’s gonna be a long season. <sigh>
