Well they got the standings posted, We're off to a great start! We're tied for dead last!! We bowled against some older ladies, basically just straight balls, down and in. They picked their spares up.

It kind of goes along with something I read, A guy said there are two ways to do sport leagues. Play the patterns, you know do all the things right breakpoints, exit point, moving in the whole nine yards etc. etc.

OR if all you want to do is have a decent average, Basically Stand right (or left as the case maybe) throw straight or down and in at the pocket. The pattern for the most part won't affect you much, You'll strike some and you just have to pick your spares up and you'll average about 180.

At least I'm starting off with a higher average. Last season I started with a 135 and finished with a 143, This seasons start is a 151. So I have to stay above that.

Excellent Bowl.

Well it took two games and trying every ball, But I shot my first 200 for this season of the league! and we even won one game.

We were on the new PBA Scorpion 42' pattern, We were supposed to bowl on lanes 5-6. But the AC wasn't working down on that end of the house, So they moved the league down to the other end lanes 27-28 for us. (I'll tell you it wasn't that much cooler down there) Boy the open bowlers that got put on the other end got a surprise on those lanes .

I started out with the Blunt Force, thumb was kind of tight. I wasn't striking but was covering spares at first. 8th frame I switch to the Plague Urethane, better fit but it plowed through the pins like a bulldozer for a couple of splits right off. So switched to the Curse, after a couple of frames but that wasn't quite it. I gave the Urethane one more go on a different line, but no go.

So I switched back to the Blunt Force and gave up trying to "Play" the pattern the way your supposed too. I moved way right, stood on 12 and just slow stroked it across 7 at the arrows out to 5 and just let it roll into the pocket. That gave me, Brooklyn and pocket strikes, frames 4-8-9 I gunned it down the lane a bit too much.

The other team had a lefty and he was playing a similar line, but with more revs. He started with a deuce, but fell off as the games went on.

I think my Paranoia with some surface would have been better for the other games, but I didn't have it with me.

Week 03: MSBS Elephant 41'

Had to watch out on this one, get outside of 5 and it wouldn't come back. I stood right and basically just pointed at the pocket.

Week 04: 2017 Pepsi PWBA Lincol Open 36' nothing much to write home about.

Short oil this week, the pattern called for ICE oil. But that wasn't ICE oil.

I had too much surface on the Urethane, it was way too early. The Curse was too snappy, The Blunt Force was kind of even.

The 3rd game I was pitching plastic starting 4th frame.

But hey the games were over average and we took 6 points out of 8.

Week 05: PBA Don Carter 50' (and the Pyramid Blunt Force.) Well tonight was something! between my team and the other team, I was the only one there!

There's 3 people to a team, my team is short one. My partner wasn't here tonight and 2 players of the team we were playing were at the nationals and the third was at his daughters something Their going to post bowl.

We'll most likely lose all or win one game maybe, I shot my a$$ off the first game with a 252! I was using the Pyramid Blunt Force. I think that's the 4th highest game on the league so far and it gives me a 300 handicap game. It was also 102 POA. pocket strikes and Brooklyn's.

2nd game just broke average and 3rd I died off, I bowled 3 games in about a hour and 10min. I tried to go at a even pace, but well couldn't keep it up.

But hey I raised ave by 5 pins and I think I'll be on the sheet next week.

Wow! League night solo! Sounds tiring but fun!

Yeah it was! and the Blunt Force worked great the first game. The second game my speed started creeping up, I tried adjusting and changing balls but I couldn't find till the 6th in the 3rd game which was a little late.

I was sweating bullets at the end, I was so hot.

Okay they posted the standings and now they include handicap highs (we had to have 12 games in before they list them).

I got league season High handicap Game (300) next closest is 256 and series (678) next is 660 Hopefully it will hold. I also have high game for this week with the 252. My team also has 2nd place high handicap game, might not hold long but we made it on the board.

Well now I have to work on doing as well next week!

This should be pretty close, breakpoint might have been in a little more

I was standing on 12 and was targeting right between 5 and 10, ball surface was 600 grit with a light rub dry of a used 2000 pad at the lanes. Ball speed was about 14.8-15 at the pins.

Well this week the Pathogen Plague came through for me in the last game! Plus it helped the team take wood, we needed 22 pins last game to take wood and we got exactly that.

This week was the PBA Dragon pattern, 45' , 25.6mL. So 5 feet shorter than last week, plus everyone was here so it was getting broke down. It was similar to last week in that if you throw it too far outside it wasn't coming back. Spare shooting was tricky tonight.

I started with Blunt force games 1 & 2, it reacted similar to last week. But it was touchy and had a bit more hang, if I was slightly right.

Third game switched to the Plague and moved in, after the 2nd frame I thought it was just a bit too early, So stopped wiping it. When I popped the 10 pin, I moved right slightly and just lightly wiped it. It started carrying real good then on.

last week raised my average 5 pins, tonight added on 3 more.

Week 07: 2006 WTBA World Men's Championship 33' Short oil, low volume very flat.

Well a pretty good night, used Urethane all three games (Pathogen Plague). We took all the points, I'm not sure but I think my 201 might be the only deuce shot in the league this week. I didn't see any others, can't wait to see the standings and recaps.

The second game was trouble, but figured out the adjustment for the third game.

Raised average by two pins.

Okay there were 4 deuces shot (one guy shot 2 of those), mine was third high That's not bad.

We moved up too! 3rd place and we had high handicap game and series for last week too.

My average went up to 160 which is 15 pins higher than last year at this same week of the league. Just got to keep it up.

Ouch. Oh well, time to move on to the next league, right?

bowl1820
09-12-2018, 10:26 PM
Okay, so how did it end up and what did I learn?

Well the last week was position round, We dropped from 5th to 9th place which is next to last. Had we won all, we would have just stayed in 5th. All the places were really close some ties and only off by one point, so dropping that much was easy to do.

My ending average was 159, which is 16 pins higher than last summers sport challenge average of 143. So the alt. method of playing sport shot leagues I came across actually seems to work.

(For those that don't know. I read a post last year someone made on a reddit page (I can't find it again) where he told somebody there were two ways to approach a sport league it depended on what you were after on the league. Was it to learn to play "Sportshots" or just have a fair average on the league.

If you wanted learn to play "Sportshots" and go for optimal scoring potential, then do all the stuff look at the patterns sheets, figure the exit point, breakpoint, tips on how to play that pattern , ball selection, surfaces yada yada.

So I tried that and didn't do that great, I just don't have the speed and revs that you need. Speed and revs are important and make up for slacking off on the other things.

Then he said if you just wanted to "Average" well on the league, Basically just stand right (or left as the case maybe) and point the ball at the pocket and Not necessarily roll a full on straight ball but just use a minimal hook. Don't worry about getting a bunch of strikes, You'll get a few pocket strikes and your in good position for brooklyn strikes if you cross and you'll leave mostly makeable spares And you'll average around the 180's. (Essentially what your trying to do is take the lane out of play.)

Well that actually kind of seems to work, While I didn't average 180s (my revs are still too low and revs generate the pin carry) my average went up. I would add to his idea though, to look at pattern length and total volume of oil to give you a idea of what ball and surface to use.

overall it was fun, i'll do it again next year if i can.
