Is there a such thing as the perfect roll of a ball? In my early years throwing a Yellow dot my oil track was a few inches away from the thumb hole. I tried and tried but I was clearly over turning the ball. Later on I was able to fix that. Now that oil line is right near the thumb hole, any closer it would roll over it. Back in the day we called that a 3/4 roll which was considered ideal. Now with the days of flare it rolls away from the thumb hole which gives the appearance of over turning but it's not. As long as the first line is near the thumb hole. So what is the thinking now a days for the "perfect roll"?

I’ve never seen oil near my thumb hole, only a little fan pattern to the left of my fingers...

One of the most valuable skills to have in modern bowling is the ability to change your axis tilt to accommodate rapidly changing lane conditions, particularly if you don't want to bring a half dozen or more balls to league. Balls with little axis tilt (track near the thumb hole) don't hooks as much, but they hook sooner. Balls with more axis tilt (track further from the thumb) go longer and hook more. If you go to league with two bowling balls, by changing your tilt you actually have four different reactions. When you combine this with playing different parts of the lane, your combinations are virtually endless.

I noticed that Rob! On monday I was able to change my axis tilt by turning my wrist. It went way farther down the lane then snapped hard at the end. It was the same ball but it acted like I switched to a much more aggressive ball. I honestly thought I threw it out the window and was heading for a 3 count and SNAP there it went right into the pocket. It didn't take much. Even my team mates raised their eyebrows when they seen it.

Pretty good timing for this question. I have been struggling with spares and tonight I noticed I have been missing to the right (lefty here). My ball seems to hook more and looks like more revs on my spares. Obviously I'm doing something different but no idea what or how. I even missed the 5-8 twice by barely missing to the right. I can see the higher revs going down the lane so I'm changing something.
