View Full Version : Be careful when you get back to bowling.......

After not bowling for around six months I started thinking if something will get hurt when I go back to slinging my bowling balls. All of my bowling muscles I am sure are tight. Didn't get much exercise during this time except for grass cutting once that season started. I found out it is very easy to put on the weight. Mine isn't that bad but I don't want to go higher if I can help it. I think I should dust off my dumbbell weights and start doing some of the lighter ones first just to get in a little bit of better shape. The only thing I think of is if my knees will be okay with a normal approach. I have osteoarthritis in my knees and have had both hips replaced. Before bowling came to a halt I was using a normal approach with no trouble then. All of the sitting around during this virus thing might have changed that. So I guess getting some exercise before bowling opens up would be a good idea so none of us get hurt. Has anyone here done any favors for your muscles so you don't hurt something when you start slinging your bowling balls down the lanes? Stay safe.

Even when things are “normal” and we’re bowling league every week it’s a good idea to get some other exercise in. With not bowling for months it’s even more important.
My normal routine for a number of years has been to do a series of Yoga stretches at least every other day. Probably spend 15 minutes or so. I also have an Eileen’s Bowling Buddy Power Trainer which I use almost every day, at least ten swings with each arm, up to twenty. Since COVID 19 my wife and I have tried to go for a walk every day. We tend to alternate between a short 15-20 minute walk and go up to 40-45 minutes for the longer ones.
With arthritic knees it might be wise to avoid long walks on hard surfaces. Water aerobics would be good if you have access to a pool and cycling is also less stressful for the knees with the benefit of building up the leg muscles.

I kept up my daily workouts during the stay at home orders. 45 minutes/16 miles every single day on the stationary bike using different training/tension programs at mostly high settings. When I went bowling for the first time in 14 weeks last weekend, I was still sore afterwards in the hips and rear upper leg area. It is amazing that despite staying in shape, there are muscles that are obviously still not being used!

Finally the bowling alley opened. Was so happy to get there and check it out, bowl a few games. Couldn't stay long but it was great to see familiar faces both in the staff and bowlers. Have missed it so very much. Didn't bowl great, but didn't get myself in trouble either. Lanes were dry and that was part of the issue. Bowlers on every other lane and shortened hours for now. Hope the fall brings back most of our league bowlers. Another milestone crossed.
