Sargeant at arm's

I ran across this term while going through league settings in BLS, the system we use for all our leagues. In all my years I have never known of anyone who carried this position on a bowling league or ever heard it used.

I get they are the one who is supposed to make sure people are following the rules. They are also the one you want to stand behind in case a knife fight breaks out. Okay maybe the second one doesn't apply to bowling leagues.

Is this just an old school term or does this position still actually exist? For any issues with the rules, I've always went to the top and talked to the league president. Then again, circumventing authority isn't rare for me.

yeah - not sure either.

Ours basically runs the meetings because she has a loud voice compared to the Sec and Pres who are very quiet.

Back in the early 90's I was Sargeant at Arms in our car club. It disbanded about6 months after I joined but here is a list of what I did as my duties...

The only time I've seen anyone listed as one was when I first joined the local sport league. I don't think he ever had to really do anything, but since he was also the manager of the pro shop I don't think any one would have wanted to get on his bad side.

Every league (and Tournaments) I've been on has had a "Sergeant at Arms", I've even been the "Sergeant at Arms" a few times. The duties are not just being the enforcer, You do whatever the Pres. or Board might need you to do. You could passing out papers, setting up the room etc.

"Sergeant at Arms" I believe isn't a required officer, but if it's decided they want one. They are elected at the organizational meeting.

As far as "knife fights" I haven't personally seen one, But I have seen some fist fights and some other things. Like bowlers throwing chairs and shoes down the lanes or at people etc

The knife fight comment was just me cracking wise about the outdated duties from the late 1800's and early 1900's for being security for the US presidents of the era. They generally did not carry firearms but we're trained knife fighters and in other hand to hand combat. They had other guys who had the good weapons as they obviously still do.
