Wes Malott Regains Top Spot in PBA Player of the Year Chase
Norm Duke Falls 16 Points Behind With Four Tournaments to Go in 2008-09 Season
SEATTLE, Wash. (March 4, 2009) – Wes Malott’s victory in the Professional Bowlers Association’s Etonic Marathon Open in Indianapolis Sunday put him back into a commanding lead in the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour Player of the Year race with only four tournaments remaining.
Malott’s third victory of the 2008-09 season gave him a total of 74 points and a 16-point cushion over Norm Duke in the Player of the Year race. Of the four remaining events, three are standard tournaments offering 16 points to win and eight for second place while the season-ending 66th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open includes 24 points for the winner and 12 for the runner-up.
Also at stake in the Player of the Year points race are 10 berths in the new King of Bowling Powered by Amp Energy series. Chris Barnes holds the 10th spot with 21 points, but right behind is Parker Bohn III with 20 and five players with 16 each: Mike Machuga, Mike Wolfe, Steve Harman, Jeff Carter and Pete Weber. The King of Bowling Powered by Amp Energy will air on five consecutive Wednesdays on ESPN at 9 p.m. Eastern, starting April 22 and continuing through May 20.
Heading into this week’s Don Johnson Buckeye State Eliminator Championship in Columbus, Ohio, Malott also led the tour in average, bowling at a 225.27 pace, while Duke held the lead in official earnings with $141,830.
Two other key races to watch are the Extreme Swing points race, which will reward the top eight with berths in the GEICO PBA Team Shootout hosted by Six Flags and the Grand Slam Swing points race, where another four Team Shootout berths are at stake. The final two events in the Extreme Swing are the Buckeye State Eliminator and the GoRVing Match Play Championship, March 2-8, in Norwich, Conn. The U.S. Open is the final Grand Slam Swing event.
