LAS VEGAS - Former Professional Bowlers Association standouts Dave Husted of Milwaukie, Ore., and Mark Baker of Santa Ana, Calif., proved they are still as sharp as ever as they helped Forgey Sports Medicine 1 into the Regular Team lead at the USBC Open Championships on Wednesday.

After a slow 964 start, the group added games of 1,086 and 1,150 and moved into the top spot with a 3,200 team total. Their finale was the second-highest team game of the year behind previous leader, Highland Lanes 2 of Ottawa, Ohio, which shot 1,157 on the way to a 3,140 effort.

"In the first game, we all came out really tight," said Husted, a PBA Hall of Famer who helped his team to a sixth-place finish at the 2007 Open Championships. "Before we started the second game, we picked each other up, and that's when we settled down."

Forgey Sports Medicine 1 led by Baker, a four-time PBA champion, who shot 698. He was followed by Bob Porter (657), David Grooms (620), Corey Husted (616) and 14-time PBA titlist Dave Husted (609).

The team's second game provided the confidence they needed and put them right back into contention.

"We knew what we were shooting for before the team event started," Dave Husted said. "Having strikes going into the 10th frame was key. We've been on Tour before so we knew how to make our shots and deal with the pressure."

After years of individual success, the annual trip to the Open Championships is a welcomed opportunity for Husted and his teammates to bowl together and enjoy the team atmosphere.

"This is the only time of the year we all bowl together," Dave Husted said. "It's nice to post a good score, all bowl well and most importantly, all have a blast. We will have some great stories to tell."
