RENO, Nev. - Every three years since 1997, the United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships have been held in Reno, bringing tens of thousands of women to Northern Nevada for a few days of bowling.

While each bowler is in Reno for only three or four days to bowl her nine games, the tournament is so big that it runs for 100 days, starting with opening ceremonies at 3 p.m. Saturday at National Bowling Stadium. The tournament's final ball of what is considered the world's largest annual participatory sporting event for women won't be rolled until July 5.

"This marks our sixth trip to Reno and we're looking forward to sharing our sport and this event with the Reno community once again," USBC vice president of tournaments Jack Mordini said. "The competitors in the Women's Championships will get treated to a first-class experience in Reno while competing in one of bowling's greatest venues, the National Bowling Stadium."

This year, 8,330 five-woman teams (41,650 bowlers) are scheduled to bowl in five average-based divisions. They also will bowl singles and doubles events, and their nine-game scores will be combined to determine all-events titles.
