LAS VEGAS - When two attempts at finding a doubles partner didn't work out for Lynn Corey of Addison, Ill., he could have let it affect his performance at the 2009 USBC Open Championships.

Instead, the 36-year-old right-hander confidently took to the lanes at Cashman Center by himself Thursday night and made sure all eyes were on him as he closed out his doubles set with the 13th perfect game of this year's event. He had games of 205, 193 and 300 for a 698 series.

Corey's efforts to find a doubles partner started well in advance when he and his teammates made arrangements to bring a companion team to Las Vegas. When that team decided to attend the tournament at another time, Corey suddenly became the odd man out.

During their team event Wednesday, Corey decided to pair up with the fifth bowler on the team they ended up crossing with. When one of the other team's bowlers hurt his knee and would be unable to return the next day for doubles and singles, Corey again found himself without a partner.

"It doesn't matter," said Corey, who made his 13th consecutive USBC Open Championships appearance. "You do this for the experience, and it was definitely an experience. It was lucky number 13."

Throughout his tournament career, doubles has proven to be Corey's strongest event. In his 12 previous appearances, he has averaged 207 in doubles and 193 in both team and singles.

Corey's good fortune on the lanes Thursday almost resulted in another 300 when he started his second game of singles with 10 consecutive strikes before leaving the 3 and 6 pins on his 11th shot. He finished singles with games of 209, 288 and 194 for a 691 set.

"I totally choked," said Corey, who runs a pro shop and is a certified bowling coach. "I wasn't nervous because I had just shot 300, but I choked."

Corey added 625 in team and finished his 2009 tournament campaign with a career-best 2,014 all-events total. His previous high was 1,927 at the 2007 event in Reno, Nev.

"It's a relief," Corey said. "I've bowled well here, but I haven't scored well. I don't throw that many strikes here. This is great."
