RENO, Nev. - Clara Guerrero of Austin, Texas, and Jenifer Larson of Tupper Lake, N.Y., finished strong Friday night to overtake the lead in Classic Doubles at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships.

Guerrero and Larson each bowled matching 252 games to secure the Classic Doubles lead with 1,404. Robin Romeo and Jeanne Naccarato previously held the top spot with a 1,361 set. Guerrero shot 728 with Larson adding 676.

The pair bowled doubles together for the second consecutive year after first meeting at last year's Women's Championships.

"We were both subs last year," Larson said. "We were both the odd person out with our crossing teams, so bowling doubles was our first meeting."

Although they weren't familiar with each others games, their second pairing resulted in a much bigger set.

"I bowled so poorly in doubles for her last year," said Guerrero, who competed in the Professional Bowlers Association Women Series this past season. "I knew I had to bowl better this year."

Guerrero hopes to continue her success at the USBC Queens, which starts April 25 at the National Bowling Stadium.

"I definitely feel good after the way I bowled today," Guerrero said. "The tournament environment and pairings will be different, but I have confidence going in."

Following her doubles performance, Larson continued to strike in singles. In her second game, she struck on her first 11 shots before getting seven on her final ball for a 297 on her way to a 714 series.

"I just wanted to throw it good in the 10th frame," Larson said. "I had some poor 10th frames earlier in the tournament, so I just wanted to throw it good."
