RENO, Nev. - Once Shannon O'Keefe of Arlington, Texas, fixed one little hitch in her game Monday she put on a record-breaking performance in match play at the 2009 United States Bowling Congress Queens.

The five-time Team USA member fired a tournament-record 803 series in the second round of three-game, double-elimination match play and leads a group of 16 players who remain undefeated at the Queens. O'Keefe's total topped the previous high of 801 by Dede Davidson in 1999.

O'Keefe's big set included the fifth perfect game of this year's tournament as she defeated fellow Team USA member Shannon Pluhowsky of Phoenix, 803-670, at the National Bowling Stadium.

"This morning in the middle of the third game of qualifying, I realized I was really hesitant with my pushaway," O'Keefe said. "The second I got that sorted out, everything fell into place. I believed every single shot off my hand was going to strike."

In her opening round match, O'Keefe fired a 280 game in defeating Angela Wilt of Westland, Mich., 725-649. In all, O'Keefe averaged nearly 255 per game in her two matches.

"To get off to a start like this in match play is an unbelievable feeling," O'Keefe said. "Now I just have to refocus because there is still a lot of work to be done."

Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., entered match play as the top seed after leading qualifying with a 15-game total of 3,472, also a tournament record, and also went 2-0.

Kulick staged a big comeback in her opening match, stringing 10 strikes for a 280 game to close out a 716-695 victory over Linda Kogut of Jacksonville, Fla. Kulick then defeated newly-elected USBC Hall of Famer Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., 688-584.

"It wasn't easy but there are never any easy matches when it comes to a format like this," Kulick said. "Being the top seed you have a bull's-eye on your back. But I just have to take it one match at a time."

Defending champion Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, opened match play with a 644-573 victory over Joy Esterson of Annapolis, Md. Barnes then fell to Lisa Bishop of Belleville, Mich., 676-666 before staying alive in the contenders bracket with a 684-623 win over Anita Manns of Hutto, Texas.

In the contenders bracket late Monday, 32 of the 64 players in the match play field were eliminated from the tournament. The remaining 32 players will battle Tuesday for the five spots in the televised championship round. The stepladder finals will be conducted at the Reno Events Center and broadcast live on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. EDT on Wednesday.
