PBA Senior Tour Heads to Charlotte Area May 3-6
For Mooresville Miller High Life Classic
SEATTLE, Wash. (April 30, 2009) – George Pappas, one of the Professional Bowlers Association’s all-time greatest players, will host the world’s greatest PBA Senior Tour players at George Pappas Victory Lanes when the PBA Senior Mooresville Miller High Life Classic visits Mooresville, N.C., May 3-6.
Pappas, voted the 33rd best bowler of all time as part of PBA’s 50th anniversary celebration this season, is a 10-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour and two-time Senior Tour titlist. He is scheduled to compete in a field that will feature approximately 150 players age 50 and older.
Pappas, who owns three bowling centers in North Carolina, cut back his participation significantly on the National Tour in 1990 when he was in his early 40s, and had to wait several years to join the Senior Tour. When he returned to action, he promptly demonstrated he can still play the game at a high level, earning 1997 PBA Senior Rookie of the Year honors after winning the first of his two Senior Tour titles that year.
Bowling the Miller High Life Classic will be his first Senior Tour appearance in two years, but he still manages to stay sharp by bowling regularly in league and regional tournaments.
“I’m probably bowling as well as I ever have,” said the 62-year-old Pappas. “Even though it’s been quite a while since I bowled regularly on Tour, I still bowl a lot of tournaments and PBA regional events which forces you to keep learning, whether it be the equipment, lane conditions or whatever. The sport is constantly evolving and you have to keep up with it.”
In addition to Pappas, several other players and Hall of Famers named to the PBA’s all-time 50 greatest players list will be in North Carolina, including John Petraglia, Manapalan, N.J.; Tom Baker, King, N.C.; Dave Soutar, Bradenton, Fla. and Wayne Webb, Sacramento, Calif. In his first year of eligibility, 24-time PBA Tour titlist and Hall of Famer Brian Voss of Alpharetta, Ga., is making his Senior Tour debut this season.
Also scheduled to compete are PBA Hall of Famers Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas; Roy Buckley, Westerville, Ohio, 10-time Senior Tour champion Dale Eagle, Tavares, Fla., and Senior Tour newcomer Rohn Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska who has won the first two Senior Tour events this year.
The Mooresville stop will be the third of 12 events as the Senior Tour celebrates its 29th season.
Competition begins with eight-game qualifying blocks May 4-5 at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The field will then be cut to the top 32 players who will advance to best-of-five match play beginning May 6 at 9 a.m. Match play continues all day on May 6 with the Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Eastern. Practice and pro-ams will take place on May 3.
