PBA Regional Players Championship, Tour Trials
Set to Begin 10-Day Run in Allen Park, Mich.
Future stars of professional bowling will share spotlight in back-to-back events
SEATTLE, Wash. (May 20, 2009) – As a prelude to the Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling coming later this year, Michigan bowling fans will be treated to two events at Thunderbowl in Allen Park, Mich., beginning later this week that will showcase some of the talented young players who may become the stars of the future.
Leading off the 10-day program will be the PBA Regional Players Championship, one of two major championships for PBA regional and non-exempt players. The May 22-25 tournament offers a $10,000 first prize plus a berth in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions and an expenses-paid berth in the 2010 Regional Players Invitational.
In 2008, Sean Swanson of Springfield, Mo., defeated Gregg Zicha of Glen Ellyn, Ill., 247-154, to win the PBA Lake County Indiana Regional Players Championship at Stardust Bowl in Merrillville, Ind., for his first PBA Regional major title.
For many of the regional players, the “RPC” is a tune-up for the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour Trials, a tournament with an innocent-sounding name that has had a huge impact on the careers of several talented players – young and not-so-young. The PBA Tour Trials is one of the most physically and mentally demanding tournaments in professional bowling where the top-scoring eight players will earn exemptions to bowl during the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season.
From May 27-31, the entire field will bowl nine games per day on each of five different, demanding PBA lane conditioning patterns. A field of more than 150 players – men and women – will include former exempt players who hope to resurrect their careers, rising young stars from the PBA’s regional ranks, some of the PBA Senior Tour’s top stars, 10 outstanding international players and, if history holds true, a handful of newcomers who want to find out how they compare.
In 2008, Dave D’Entremont, Craig Tuholski, Chad Kloss, Joe Bailey, Jason Lundquist, Randy Weiss and Terrance Reeves earned berths on the 2008-09 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour in a dramatic Tour Trials where the final Tour berths weren’t decided until the 45th and final game.
