A pair of two-handed international stars advanced to Round of 28 match play in the Professional Bowlers Association Viper Championship Saturday at Thunderbowl Lanes.
Two-handers Jason Belmonte of Australia, and Osku Palermaa of Finland, finished qualifying in fifth and 18th, respectively.
Belmonte, who made history last season by becoming the first two-handed player to win a Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour event, bowled a 3,080 14-game pinfall (220 average).
“I’m encouraged by the way I bowled today because I’ve been disappointed in how I’ve been bowling here at the World Series (PBA World Series of Bowling) so far,” said the 26-year-old Belmonte. “I can tell you I’m far from being in top form so I’ve got a ways to go.”
The 25-year-old Palermaa who also has numerous international titles to his credit and a best PBA Tour finish of fifth in the 2004 U.S. Open, had a 2,953 pinfall for a 210.9 average.
“I was happy with the way I bowled but I struggled a little bit with carrying the corner pins,” Palermaa said. “Tomorrow is match play and I just need to do what I do best. When I’m at my best I feel I can beat anyone.”
Seven-time Tour titlist Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill., topped the 72-player Viper Championship field with a 3,214 pinfall (229.5 average).
“The Viper condition is one of the tougher (PBA) lane conditions and generally I do a little better on the tougher ones,” Jaros said. “There’s more emphasis on making spares and using speed control which better suits my game.
Twenty-time women’s professional titlist Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, of Keller, Texas, led the PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM Viper Championship qualifying with a 3,157 14-game pinfall (225.5 average). She recently finished second in the 2009 Women’s U.S. Open.
“The second block was a little different for me,” Dorin-Ballard said. “Generally I bowled well but just didn’t make all the right adjustments and had to grind it out.”
The top 28 players from the Viper Championship and the top eight from the Women’s Series Viper Championship advance to best-of-seven game match play beginning Sunday. Both events are being held concurrently this weekend as part of the PBA World Series of Bowling.
The finals of both events will be taped on Sept. 5 at Thunderbowl Lanes for airing on ESPN Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. ET.
