Patrick Dombrowski and Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard are the early qualifying leaders after seven games Saturday in the PBA Viper Championship and PBA Women Series presented by BOWL.COM Viper Championship. Both events are being held concurrently this weekend as part of the PBA World Series of Bowling at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The 31-year-old Dombrowski from Parma, Ohio, bowled a 1,654 pinfall (236.3 average) in Saturday’s first seven-game block on PBA’s Viper lane conditioning pattern to top the 72-player Viper Championship field.

“For me the lanes were pretty consistent so I didn’t have to make any major adjustments,” said the three-time PBA regional titlist. “I won my first regional in a tournament that had a lane condition similar to this so right now my game is matching up pretty well with it.”

Dorin-Ballard, of Keller, Texas, finished the first seven-game block with a 1,650 pinfall (235.7) average to lead the 20-player women’s field.

Dorin-Ballard, a 20-time women’s professional bowling titlist who recently finished second in the 2009 Women’s U.S. Open, had a little different experience on the Viper condition.

“I think for most of the women this condition generally gets better as you go, at least that’s the way it was for me,” Dorin-Ballard said. “This is one of my best (lane) conditions so hopefully my success in this event will continue.”

After qualifying concludes this evening the top 28 players in the Viper Championship and top eight in the Women’s Series Viper Championship will advance to best-of-seven game match play beginning Sunday morning. The finals of both events will be taped on Sept. 5 at Thunderbowl Lanes for airing on ESPN Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. ET.
