Friday was pro-am day at the PBA World Series of Bowling and five winners of the Max and Erma’s “Bowl with the Bus” Sweepstakes” had the opportunity to bowl with former Pittsburgh Steelers star Jerome Bettis in the MGM Grand Detroit PBA Pro-Am at Thunderbowl Lanes.

The five bowlers competing with Bettis earned their spots by entering the “Bowl with the Bus” Sweepstakes at Max and Erma’s restaurants.

Bowling with Bettis were contest winners Jeff Opalinski, Canton; Sue Oehmke and Paulette Baker, Livonia; Steve Richardson, Whitmore Lake and grand prize winner Edward Yee also of Livonia.

“Last Wednesday we were going to eat at home but didn’t have much food in the house so we decided to go to the Max and Erma’s in Livonia,” said Yee, a 52-year-old school bus driver. “We entered the contest there and they were awarding prizes right at the restaurant. It seemed like everyone was winning a prize except us and then at the very end they announced my name and we won!”

Bettis, a Detroit native and avid bowler, starred at Notre Dame before launching a stellar National Football League career with the Los Angeles Rams where he was named 1993 NFL Rookie of the Year. Bettis subsequently left the St. Louis Rams and finished his career with the Steelers, retiring in 2006 after helping Pittsburgh win Super Bowl XL which was held in Detroit. The 5-foot-11, 255-pound running back earned his nickname, “The Bus,” by running over the opposition.

“I grew up bowling and love to bowl,” said Bettis. “It’s always special when you can get out and meet the fans and have fun at the same time.”

Yee’s grand prize included a two-night stay at MGM Grand Detroit. Five second-prize winners received two tickets each for one of the PBA World Series of Bowling ESPN telecasts on Sept. 6 at Thunderbowl Lanes.

A portion of the pro-am entry proceeds benefited Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit.

Next up on the World Series of Bowling schedule are the PBA Viper Championship and PBA Women’s Series presented by BOWL.COM Viper Championship which begin Saturday.
