What up guys. Let me try to make this as short and sweet as possible... I'm from Orlando but currently live in Tampa. I'm a junior at the university of Florida (go bulls).... I'm a beginning bowler and have always been interested in the sport but just recently decided to get myself more seriously involved in it.... I play recreationally probably 1-2 days week (usually about 6-8 games) and I average around a 140 with my high score being a 191.... I currently own no equipment but I'm looking to purchase a ball and shoes before the beginning of the year (possibly the avalanche pearl or slingshot 12 or 13lb).... I'm also hoping to join some leagues beginning next year once I buy my ball and get myself adjusted to it.... Im going to be seeking Alot of advice on ways to improving my game and proper equipment.... Also I'm looking to meet some other Cantral floridians so I can get myself Aquanted with some true bowlers because I really don't know many.... Welcome! Glad you're getting into bowling and are looking to improve. The one thing I would say is, I wouldn't go any less than 14 pounds for the ball. If you go with something lighter you will want to move up in weight once you start to learn more, so it will just be a waste to get something lighter. The most common weight these days is 15. Keep having fun and enjoy learning this great game!

You think so? Do u think I should purchase a ball or continue using the house balls until I adjust to the heavier weight

Definitely get your own ball. I promise you, if you purchased a 15 pound ball and had it drilled to fit your hand, it will feel as light as a 13 pound house ball. You'll get a better core in the ball, and the extra weight will help with accuracy and pin action. There really are no negatives. :)

Awesome.... I'm hoping to purchase one either this up coming or the pre new years pay period (gotta hate Christmas shopping).... What ball do u recommend me trying.... I'm a right handed bowler, i use the 5 step approach from the center and i have a pretty decent hook (atleast with house balls)

Hey Cash, glad to have you with us. I would suggest that you take some lessons to start things off with. The reason I say that, is because it is so easy to develop bad habits that are difficult to break later on. The other reason I say that is 'cause you will excel much faster, and enjoy the sport much more. As far the ball goes, check with the coach and take their advice.

True enough. I'm going to go check out a few pro shops tomorrow (boardwalk, Semoran AMF, Aloma Bowl) and try to get some more solid information on balls and shoes. Hopefully I could also obtain some information about coaches and walk out with a new ball and shoes :-D

You have a multitude of coaching options in the Tampa area, as well as in Orlando. My wife and I have worked with Lucy Sandelin and she's superb. We're currently enamored of our Slingshots, and I recommend that ball to everyone. Check out Aloma Bowl. Kenny Lawson is a Brunswick staffer and a great ball driller who would be happy to work with you on whatever you need. Would highly recommend him (I'm from Central FL as well)! And I'll 2nd Lucy Sandelin!
