The United States Bowling Congress announced that David Garber has been promoted to oversee three areas for the national governing body, including the International Training Center.
In his new role as High Performance Director for Team USA, the USBC Coaching program and the International Training Center, Garber will manage all activities and staff members for those interrelated areas that encompass high level training, competition and research aspects of the sport of bowling. Garber previously directed the Team USA program and was co-director of the USBC Coaching program.
The training center, which will be constructed at USBC's new headquarters facility in Arlington, Texas, will include 20 lanes (14 for training and six for research and testing of bowling equipment). High tech tools in the test center's research area will include a robotic ball thrower, computer ball tracking system and state-of-the-art biomechanics technology such as motion capture, which uses a sensor and computer system to precisely track body movements of bowlers. Plans call for coaches to use that technology on the test center lanes to coach Team USA and bowlers from all over the world.
USBC Team USA includes a mix of professional and amateur bowlers who represent the United States in international bowling competition. USBC Coaching trains and certifies professional coaches to teach the sport of bowling worldwide.
Garber, 38, is a USBC Silver coach and three-time Team USA member. He led Team USA to the team gold medal at the 1993 American Zone Championships in Mexico and won four gold medals at the 1993 Tournament of the Americas, which prompted Bowlers Journal International to name him their Amateur Bowler of the Year. Garber served on the USBC Board of Directors and the Team USA Athletes Advisory Committee and was a regional sales manager with Storm Bowling Products.
"The areas that David will manage are all important to the credibility of USBC," said USBC Vice President - National Governing Body Neil Stremmel. "David's vast experience in the bowling industry, both as an administrator and elite athlete, makes him a great fit for this position. David's knowledge and skills will help tie together Team USA, the Coaching program and the International Training Center, which will allow us to train top coaches and bowlers with cutting-edge tools and technology never before used in the sport of bowling."
