quick question on layout

should i be able to go to another(different) pro shop and have them tell me how the ball is drilled for reaction or how can i tell? is there a way that i can do it by the location of the pap? i use to bowl with a guy that could tell me how it was drilled and what to expect (what the ball was going to do) by looking at where the holes were drilled in accordence to the pap but since then lost touch with him.

Hi Tracy,

This may not be 100% correct, but it will be close. The farther the pin from your PAP, the longer the ball should go before hooking. There is much more, and maybe someone can elaborate some more.

I think it is always better to have someone watch you throw before you have a ball drilled.

But any good pro shop driller should be able to fit you in a ball well.

Then click on Drilling Layouts, this will give you a great idea of how different pin to PAP and MB/CG to PAP distance can effect ball reaction.

This also should give you a good idea of why certain angles are used in Dual Angle layouts to achieve a certain reaction.

To answer your question simply, The pin and CG/MB relationship to the pin will determine how the ball is drilled. If you know your pap, and can take a picture of the ball, I can tell you what your layout is. Longer pins (4.5" to 6") are meant to make a smoother, arcing hook, while shorter pins (4" to 3 3/8") are made to create a stronger, all at once reaction. The higher the pin is above your pap, the longer on the lane it will go before it hooks, and the lower it goes, the sooner it hooks. There are a lot more things that go into it, but that is a basic idea for you to work on. Where the CG/MB is will make a big difference too.
