Generally speaking you want your spare ball to go straight, so plastic is the coverstock of choice. Weight should be the same as your strike ball.

Definitely the same weight as your strike ball, as J said. The Ice Storm is their most popular spare ball and would be great for you. There is a black and silver model and a purple/silver one as well. They also have the Team Storm White, Mainframe and Team Storm Lightning Bolt balls which are all clear and would work as well.

I also have a Storm Ice and went down a pound. I barely notice a difference in the weight but wanted a little more deflection to increase my margin for error on baby splits. So far it has worked as I wanted.

I know the ball is bought but I want to add my advice for other readers. If you plan to throw a plastic ball as a strike ball then get 15 or 16lbs. If you are using a plastic as a spare go lower in weight. You have what 35 lbs of pin weight to move with a strike throw and 3.3 or so for a single pin spare do you really need 15 lbs. By throwing same weight you have to use the same energy as a strike throw but for far fewer pins. I can stay strong in 8 games sets because I'm not wasting energy on spares.

I went with the Hammer Axe because I found one cheap, the Storm ones are awesome though. Really any plastic ball will do the trick.

Greycat, although I agree with you, the conventional wisdom says that changing weight will alter your timing. That also makes sense. Guess that means it depends on the individual, like most things. Personally, I have balls ranging from 14-16 and have even thrown 14lbs on one lane and 15 on the other*.

*lane 1 at my home house it right against the wall not allowing us to play deep so I will use my 14lbs urethane. The lighter weight allows a slightly higher ball speed so I can still put a good amount of revs on the ball.

I prefer to use the same weight (16 lbs) across my whole arsenal. It allows me to have the same feel throwing the ball.

Is it recommended to use the same grip (conventional, fingertip, etc.) for your spare ball as your regular ball?

Thanks.

Yes. The given theory is comfort but I don't know too many people that are comfortable with conventional after going fingertip.
