View Full Version : Milligan finishes second at European Women's Masters

BARCELONA, Spain - England's Kristen Penny defeated Team USA's Tennelle Milligan of Costa Mesa, Calif., 2-1, Saturday to win the 2008 European Women's Masters.

Penny, who also won the event in 2006, took the first game in the best-of-three match 226-187, but Milligan came back to even it up with a 199-191 victory in Game 2. Penny took the deciding game 233-223 to knock off Milligan, the event's defending champion.

In the semifinals, Penny, the top seed, came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat No. 4 Ghislaine van der Tol of the Netherlands, 2-1. Milligan, the No. 2 seed, swept No. 3 Britt Brondsted of Denmark, 2-0.

Penny took home nearly $4,800 for the victory, while Milligan received about $2,700 for second place. Brondsted and Van der Tol each earned about $1,350.

Junior Team USA member Christine Bator of Warren, Mich., also competed in the event. She finished in 12th place, missing the semifinals by 137 pins.

The European Women's Masters drew 66 women - 59 qualifiers and seven players invited by the organizers (Penny, Milligan, Brondsted, Van der Tol, Bettina Lund of Denmark, Sandra Torrents of Spain and Sue Abela of Malta).

The invited players were seeded into the quarterfinals while the rest of the field competed in six-game qualifying blocks, with a maximum of two re-entries. The top four players after 12 games in the semifinals advanced to the finals.
