This is something I did and it fixed my problem.
Buy yourself a pair of those greyish suede gloves from Home Depot - the ones the boilermakers jackets and gloves are made of. You may have to unpick some threads to spread them out a bit and then place the part of the shoe you want to cover on them and draw around it. Cut out the section, and glue it to the bottom of your shoe.
The material is thin, less than 16th of an inch. Don't be skimpy with the glue but try not to get it on the good side.
Gloves are about 2 bucks and the fabric glue about 3.
Quick easy fix and it WORKS.
