changing coverstock surface?

HI All. Since I still consider myself a novice when it comes to technical stuff I thought I would ask the more experienced this question. Until I am able to afford to get a new ball I am bowling with my brunswick Galaxie 300. I enjoy the ball but would like to get a little more hook from it. Granted I am still a novice when it comes to throwing a hook but I thought that If I lightly sanded the coverstock on the ball It may help the ball grab the lane a bit more. the ball I believe is urethane. would lightly sanding it with say a 1500 grit sandpaper help? or would it just mess it up? I know that changing the balls surface is a common practice but am unsure about the best way to do this. What do I need to be careful about or is there a better way to accomplish this. Please keep in mind that money is tight.

My guess is that sanding to a coarser finish will make the ball grab the lane earlier and give more hook. The risk is in hooking too early and rolling out before reaching the pocket. This can be corrected by sanding with progressively finer grits , i.e. 2000, 4000, etc, until you find the right surface.

The Galaxie 300 is an old polyester ball, I remember it as being pretty dang hard. It probably needs a lot more surface than 1500 sandpaper. I would probably start with either a grey scotchbrite pad, or valentino's Resurrection to get it down to 800 grit. If that doesn't work, then a green scotchbrite pad to bring it to 600. The burgundy should get it down to 320.

Thanks for the information. I think I will try out a few different grits to see what happens. I am not out anything really if I don't get the desired results. a new ball is in the works with the ol income tax returns this year.

You can't mess up polyester. Scuff it up a bit, and it will hook more. 1500 is a good start, then try 1000. I don't recommend going lower than that. Without a reactive resin coverstock, the ball will only hook when it hits the dry, so play the outside of the lane if you want the ball to hook. Good luck!
