I'm needing a little bit of help with the release of my ball. I've only started "Dropping" the ball since i've slowed my speed way down (12-14 mph) to allow hook. I've only been bowling for about 4 months and only two months using my thumb instead of just two fingers.

What could be causing me to drop my ball like this? I normally look at the dots when i throw. Should i move farther out to the arrows?
Any advice would be great.

When i'm wearing the white shirt is my attempt to correct this.

Didn't watch the video, but started suffering the same thing. Ball fit is the first thing I would look at.
Next would be the release - are you trying to bowl "flatter"? Try coming around the ball a little bit more.

By what I could see in the videos it looks to be maybe a ball fit issue maybe the thumb hole
is a little bit to big or the pitch of the thumb hole might not be right for you.

I would also think it looks like a ball fit issue. when I first got back into bowling and used a house ball on an unexpected bowling outing with the family I had that issue with my release looking very similar. Are you using a ball that you owned before taking a break? I had some fit issues with my old ball and had to do some minor adjustments.

The videos in the white shirt were much better than the other. Learning to throw a hook properly takes time. Learning when to lift with your fingers and rotate is something that has to "click". That being said, you need to try to get your hand under the ball when you first start and throughout the swing. What I mean by that is, have the palm of your hand facing the ceiling when you hold the ball at the start of your approach and throughout the swing. Then, as you feel your thumb starting to release, rotate your hand toward the handshake position while lifting with your fingers. Keep doing what you're doing to get the ball out onto the lane.

I can't tell if it's a ball fit issue, but your hand is on top of the ball - you need to work on having it more in a cupped position. It takes lots of practice and plenty of growing pains.

I go along with the Mayor, watching the videos your releasing on top of the ball. With your fingers and thumb coming out almost at the same time. So your not getting much power or action in your shot.

you're not very low to the line either, to add what to the other guys are saying. that doesn't help.

but the big thing is what they said, you'll want to be behind the ball at release, not on top of it. cup your wrist more if possible. if you can't, try some wrist workouts, curl some dumbbells

I forgot to mention in my other post about your hand being on top of the ball
but as the others have said try to keep your hand under the ball. I know when
I first started bowling way back in the early 1980's I had the same problem as
you are having about toping the ball.

The way I was told how to make myself quit toping the ball so bad was to take
a sock that you have lying around and roll it into a ball. Then practice holding it
in the palm of your hand and and go through the motion of throwing it like you
would your bowling ball. Then at the point of release rotate your hand and your
fingers and make the sock spin like you would spin a underhand football pass.

You could always go and buy a nerf football and practice spinning it out of your
hand and that way you'll get the right feeling of lifting the bowling ball with your
fingers at the point of release.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have one more question, if I were to try to speed my ball up would it help correct the problem? I feel like I bowl in slow motion, but i've been told i needed to because if i bowl any faster it's hard for my ball to react. In these videos my ball is rolling at about 12-14mph. Before I was bowling at 16-17 and I'm not sure if my problems were as bad.

As far as the fit goes, The misson x (green ball) does feel a lot looser than my warning sign. I've bought some tape and hopefully that will help out.

I'll surely try to get under the ball, and post a newer video later. I didn't realize that was my problem until you guys pointed it out.

Hi there,

I started bowling the same as you do,
My coach advice me to Bend a little
to the final approach just before the release
of the ball. the sliding foot with a little bended knee.

just to lower a little your body before the release,
and your release of the ball will be smooth.

It's usually easier to start off slow to learn how to throw first, then adjust speed later. You will sacrifice score, but you'll work on the long-term goal of becoming a better bowler. You can also work on keeping your thumb straight because it is probably bent with your hand being on top of the ball. You'll probably need to redo the thumb slug to start with a smaller hole.
