View Full Version : Does your team affect your scoring?

I was just going over the end of season score sheets and noticed a strange trend with my scores. On my primary bowling night my average was about 15-20 pins less than on nights I sub. Thinking about it though my primary team while we do bowl it's more of a fun night out than a serious night at the lanes. When I sub I'm bowling with some pretty serious people and while they have fun they are more focused on the game than sitting back BSing and drinking. I'll still have the same amount of drinks (or more depending on hangings) when I sub, it's the same lanes, and I'm using the same equipment so I should maintain the same average but I don't. So is it the people around you that affect the scoring???

The lines that they bowl will affect you, as well as the frame of mind you are in. I bowled league with a guy that threw all urethane equipment. Because he would play across my line with it, I got a lot of over/under reaction issues. The last year I bowled with him I averaged 203, the next year I averaged 214. So yes, there are many differences between teams. I bowl with two guys that play a similiar line as me now, and we are all averaging the best we ever have. I attribute it to having more shots we can watch on that part of the lane, and we can break the oil down in one spot, instead of wishwashing all the oil because everyone throws in a differnt spot and angle. A lot of people will "play down to their competition" too. So if you are bowling better bowlers when you sub, you may try harder than if you are bowling some guys there just to have a good time. I also find that I average a lot better the later in the day I bowl. I bowled a morning league for a little while, and my body isn't loose and fluent early in the morning. I much prefer bowling around 6:30 or 7:00pm.

The league I bowl in on Saturdays is a four person mixed team league. I have always average around 15 pins lower in that league. It's more about hanging out and such..nobody on my team drinks regularly. However, that league has a lot of people that bring their kids, grandchildren, etc. The two males on this team have tried recently to take it more seriously but that gets difficult when the woman don't even warm up and never practice. It does affect morale when you need them to hit close to their average and then they don't even come within 50 pins.
Sunday morning league, I'm too goofy to get too serious. I hit my average most games but really don't understand how. I will do stuff like have my opponent pick my line and which ball to use, see how high I can score without hitting the pocket. In my defense, when asked to finish the season on this team the captain asked if I could lighten the mood. We had bowled summer league together so he knew I could have a good time and not afraid of making fun of anybody, including myself.
Monday night minors is all business. We have one guy on the team that I would like to replace. When he is having a bad game or makes a bad shot, he just gives up. It ticks me off when that happens and we lose points for overall pins by less than 20 and he gave up in the third frame. Sundays and Mondays averages are the same with Saturday's down slightly this season.
My goal for summer league is to average the same in my PBA experience league as I did on Mondays and on the 9 pin no-tap league, average 260. To even come close I have to focus, not goof off too much and not watch the occasional eye candy that wanders in. Yes that last part is the hardest to do:o

This season, my doubles partner and I have been almost completely out of synch. I'll be bowling well one game and he'll be struggling one game, then he'll find his line and I'll forget how to make spares.
When I sub in a late afternoon league, I'm averaging about ten pins higher. It may be that I'm more awake at 4:00p.m. than at 9:00p.m. Or it could be that I don't have any responsibilities in this league.
Monday's league is a singles league so there are no teammates, but you do get paired with another bowler that you move pairs with each game. I haven't analyzed it but I feel like I bowl better when paired with some bowers rather than others.
Looking back over the years there have been several bowlers that I always enjoyed bowling against, because we always seemed to bowl well against each other.

yes it does its amazing how a laid back team is versus a team thats more focused along with the various lines bowlers play like daniel mareina said.
so yes it does.

I definitely notice a difference between when certain team members are there or not there. It's my fault, but certain people get under your skin. Plus I have fun in my league, but I still wanna bowl well. So I take it more seriously than others do, even if on the outside I am happy go lucky. a lot of people just want to say "we're here to have fun"

Bowling your best is always easier with bowlers that are paying attention. If you bowl with your buds and the bud light your scores will show. But that does not mean that you will bowl bad but more for fun. If we take it to serious in league play it will get old fast. So when you need to bowl good cut back on the buds.

I think the beer may have a definite impact. Just really going over my Wednesday nights scores and even in the same night my first game average is 9 pins higher than the third game :D I guess I'll use that night as "practice" and really bowl on the other nights with the more serious players. I enjoy the game but serious all the time definitely would kill it for me.

For me if I have a teamate or opponent for that matter who is not paying attention as previously mentioned will throw my timing off. Perhaps I am a bit anal but I am a very scheduled person and rely on my teamates to be ready when their turn is up, if not I lose my rythym and my score follows suit.

i think it does affect to some degree.. when your teammates bowl well, u will want to bowl well also to avoid being the person dragging the team down.. but if your teammates don't bowl well, there're times when u think "oh well, no matter how good i bowl, we'll still lose, so might as well try out new stuff" (or something like that)

I'm right the opposite of that when my team mates are struggling I try to bowl extra good to try and
help hold the team up so maybe they will get pumped up and start doing better. The only time that I
try out different or new stuff is when I go out and practice during the week.

I can bowl better when my teammates bowl worse. Sometimes it's just vibe. i really bowl best loose and when everyone is committed to the team. As in not playing selfish.
I get thrown off when I have teammate that makes the same mistakes and blames anyone but themselves. When I suck i know it's me. I just need to be comfortable and that can be booze or no booze.
