Just curious to know if bowling with plastic ball bowlers has any bearing on carry down? In my league team I have 3 who roll straight and the other 2 who hook the ball. I noticed the oil on the balls doesn't soak in and they never use a towel which made me think that oil will leave a path in the backend. Me and the other reactive ball user wipe every return.
I would like to ask them to use a towel but before I do I would like to know if it will be any benefit? Common logic tells me yes it plays a role.
Your thoughts...thanks

Carrydown isn't really the problem today, it's oil depletion? The little bit of oil the balls are depositing past the end of the pattern. Isn't really enough to affect the motion of today's balls.
When the balls start backing off down lane, it's because of the additional friction from the depletion of oil. It causes the ball to standup ( hook sooner), Lose rotation and have a weaker backend reaction.
So them not wiping thier balls isn't going to be a issue or making carrydown worse.
Heres a good article about it.

Great article. Amazed at the amount of research that goes into bowling! Looking forward to seeing how my ball exits the pin deck and if I can read it for an adjustment. Thanks so much for the info!

Supposedly, in the tournament that Mika K. won earlier this season, he used a plastic ball in practice to try and push oil down the lane in one area and a very porous ball to try and strip the oil in the middle, and successfully kept the high rev players from finding a good line to the pocket.

I've attempted the same thing with varying results. I usually do it to the one speed, low rev players with success but the varying rev and speed players manage to adjust. However, it does seem as it is due more to depletion as they tend to hook earlier. I really am not very concerned why as long as it messes up their normal line. These are the guys that can only play a THS at their home center but have trouble scoring any place else.

There is most definately carry down in my center. Not during league play usually, but if you bowl after open bowlers you will notice carry down very quickly. I don't think it is appropriate to ask another bowler to use a towel, but it will play a part in the lane reaction.

There is certainly carrydown with plastic balls. The Slowinski article deals with modern, flaring reactive balls. Straight, end of end plastic balls will create carrydown, whether or not you use a towel to wipe it off after each shot.
