Trying to get an understanding of skid/flip and have the basic meaning but what I would like to know is this a feature (for a lack of a better word) of the ball and drill pattern itself or does the bowlers release also have some role or is it a bit of both?

I have seen some guys release the ball "back handed" causing a reverse rotation which the ball skids then just past midlane the ball "spools up" then breaks for the pocket.

I somewhat understand that the RG is the main component of skid/flip so when selecting a new ball should one look at the RG to create better skid/flip or the pattern the ball can use?

I don't think mine skids at all or perhaps it does only that I can't physically see it.

Hope I am making sense here!

Theres a combination of things for skid/flip.

A Coverstock That will skid longer and the right surface texture.
High RG To get it down the lane.
High differental/Flare So it will hook hard on the backend.
A Layout that promotes a long skid and sharp hook.

Plus you have use it on the conditions that match up right with the skid/flip ball motion. It can get you in to trouble on the wrong shot, because it matchs up with a more limited amount of lane conditions.

Ok I will try to digest that info. But it sounds like it is not really something I need to consider at the level of experience I am, at this time. Thanks!

Even if you can't "see" it, your ball skids. I don't know your style but if you watch very closely you can see that just as the ball starts to break the speed of the rotation changes. That is where the ball "grabs" in the dry and therefor was skidding before that point. Bowlers whose rotation in close to the direction needed after the flip don't see the skid phase as plainly. Those who throw it straight or with little rotation show the skid and flip in a more exaggerated manner. I hope this helps.
You may not need or want to utilize this info yet but learning to notice it now will make it easier for you to analyze it later. I thought for years that my ball didn't skid until I videotaped a session and saw how much more rotation, but at the same angle, my ball gained.

Nailed it Bill..thanks! And for me at this time is just being able to recognize ball action change and what I may have done to create it.
