View Full Version : A old school Rev trick

You want a couple of extra revs?

Then stick a finger insert (get a soft one) on your index finger! It can give you a few more revs on the ball. (shave down one side a little for max. contact with ball surface)

you could also use a rubber finger tip (if tight enough)

That was a old school trick, they even started selling a product called the "Turbo Rev" based on this.

Me! Sure I did, I tried the insert and I also had a green Turbo Rev. I thought the Turbo Rev vinyl was just a little too hard and didn't grip the ball surface as good as it should have. The new ones look like they may be made out of a softer material now, I haven't tried one.

Back when I tried it, it was just another bowling fad. For some people it worked great, others not so much.

one company went a step farther and made this thing that fit over your entire index finger (I cant remember the name). It was shaped like a hammerhead shark, contoured to the balls shape. To give you all these revs, I never seen anyone use it and the ads disappeared after awhile.

I've got a turbo rev that Lucy Sandelin recommended. It does seem to work, but I find it uncomfortable to wear.

This is a great answer to my extra Turbo Quad insert collecting dust so I tried it on my index finger and it is a perfect fit so now it is just a matter of doing a test drive at the lanes. I am usually pretty resourceful but I would have never thought of this old skool tip!....Thanks

wonder if any PBA pros use it.. but i doubt so.. they all have monster revs already (Tommy Jones especially), to add more revs with this would be crazy i think..

Don't remember when or who but I have seen at least one pro using something like this. No, it wasn't any one like T.J. or Robert Smith.

I don't think any of them do it now. But that's where the league bowlers got the idea from back in the day.

I too have seen a pro just this season in fact but can't recall who. But I do remember he was using a yellow one. I want to say his name is Mike, last name escapes me but he is the guy who hates 2 handed bowlers. If not him then it might be the dude from England....I dunno

My wife has several in her office, I tried one on the index and small finger, felt ok.... then got out the ball and I noticed it gave a tacky feeling! It might work having them on the outside fingers... will give it a try! Would be nice if it allows more revs. or better control.... ( not that I am out of control)! LOL

Fagan is one of Belmonte's best friends on the tour, so I don't think he hates two-handers. Mika Koivunieni hates lefties, he might include two-handers since they use their left hands too.
Dude from England might be Stuart Williams.

i'm trying the two-handed.. lol

i can play the two-handed, one handed, spinner.. but all not really consistent.. only play from time to time when i'm bored..

martin

i tried out the two handed for fun when i was bored.. but since i got quite good with it, decided to practice it also.. so every time i bowl, i play usual 1 handed hook for 3-4 games, then 1-2 games with the 2-handed (i usually play about 5 games)

i used to do that too.. but now training the 1 hand so i'll just stick with it.. but when i get frustrated because i cant hook or throw at the arrow that i want, i'll throw a helicopter spare ball and let it clash the pins!

sometimes i am at a dilemma which style to use.. because i'm as good with the 2-handed as the 1-handed hook.. (in terms of score)
and to make me myself even more confused, i get more revs and hook with the 2-handed (which i like) but i would somehow prefer the 1-handed because it doesn't put as much strain on my hands..

stick to 1 style would be better.. so you can focus on 1 instead of both!

The one that doesn't strain your body. That way when you're older you won't have to switch and start all over again.

martin

i guess i'll just go with the 1-handed since i started out with that.. the 2-handed, maybe once in a while just for fun.. lol..

Try Bending you little finger under when you grip the ball or even hard up against you ring finger

Have a look at Mike Fagans little finger in the ball
Sure there are others as well

curling the pinky finger? be careful with that though.. it will feel uncomfortable at first.. and if your not used with it, sometimes that can cause blisters or injury..

i tried bending before.. hurt in between the ring finger and pinky on the palm that i was unable to bowl for a week.. i heard cases that people can think of stopping bowling for a couple of months because of it..

Seriously? Must just be me that can't see how that can happen. I have a bad habit of curling it under during my delivery if I don't think about leaving it out.

i can curl my pinky, but tends to get blisters on the pinky finger so i rarely use it.. i only recently noticed another guy curling his pinky and putting tape on that finger (to prevent blistering i think).. maybe i can try that some time.. lol..

Its what one of you said about placing the little finger tight against the ring finger! I get much more revs, without the blisters, associated with it, and it actually helps in my release as far as accuracy! He also said while bring the ball downward to move the arm in a figure 8 motion for better hooking action..

The figure 8, that's a old one. It is not really used today. Most just opt to turn out the hand.

The timing is more critical in a figure 8, because your turning the hand in then out. Where as with a straight swing you can keep on your line better and just have to turn the hand out.

the coach at my center (silver certificate, not sure from where) (he's also the proshop owner) teaches almost everybody the figure 8 style (his teaching methods seem outdated IMHO.. he got his certificate from years ago).. i tried it and just didn't work.. now i use more of a straight swing..
