It doesn't matter how it gets there, as long as the angle is right. I prefer a sharp angular hook on the back end, but if that line is not working for me, I will try a smoother hook. Since I only have 1 strike ball and 1 spare ball, I don't have the choice of changing balls to stay with my preferred line. So the lane conditions dictate which line I use.

Crankers are traditionally considered to have a higher strike percentage and play way left, etc etc.
I have found that playing any where from the gutter to as far left as the 5 board, with as much hand as I want gets my lots of length with a massive angle into the pocket. With the asymmetrical balls I can lay down at the 5 out to the 1 and let is snap back, or using a little less hand, play straight up 1,2,3 or 4 depending on speed and revs. With the symmetrical balls I find that playing 3 to 5 or straight up 5 with a lot of hand gets the same reaction. When I plan on playing this line I will start with an asymmetrical ball and when it starts to get too dry go to a symmetrical ball then to urethane or plastic. Most bowlers won't play that close to the gutter due to lack of guts. Me, I love watching my ball go half in the gutter and snap back to the pocket with a fury.

Both ball motions have their advantages. On most sport shots smooth and predictable is at least for me the best option. When playing deep inside i prefer the recovery aspect of angular balls
