I recently had minor shoulder surgery to clean up bone spurs on the rotator cup. No tendon implants. Was wondering if anyone had similar surgery and, if so, how soon before they were able to resume bowling with full ball weight.

I've had both shoulders operated on in the last 5 years. The right one which is my bowling arm was done April of 2011. I had to have tendons re-attached as well as cleaning out the bone spurs in the rotator cuff. I started back bowling in April of this year and probably could have started a little sooner but I hadn't bowled prior to that for years and started back because my 10 year old son wanted to start bowling and I came back with him. My only consession was I used to use 16 lb balls but I dropped to 15 lbs not solely because of the surgery, but a combination of that and age and modern equipment. I have had zero problems since I started back but your mileage may vary. Work hard on your physical therapy, let your therapist know you are a bowler and one of your goals is to return to the sport. He/She may have some specific exercises to increase the range of motion and work the muscles needed for bowling. Most of all listen to your Doctor, tell him you are working toward getting back on the lanes, and follw his advise and timeline. When you are ready, start slowly, and stop at the first sign of pain or anything more than the expected stiffness and soreness. Good luck and let us know how your recovery is going.

I just had surgery almost 2 months ago to repair a tear and a bone spur as well. My doctor said I should wait until about now to try but I do not have full range of motion without pain so I'm not going to try. I'll probably give it a shot in mid-August before the winter season begins. Last year, I dropped to 15 lbs in preparation of this surgery so we'll see how it goes. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I bowled my first game in almost 3 months since my surgery. My shoulder is still very weak and I do not have full range of motion yet. I was able to roll the ball and noticed my wrist lost its bowling strength as well. I'll be working on this over the next month before the winter season starts. My mph dropped by about 2 and it affected my release point to a much later point. I can deal with that as I really just want to get my range and strength back.
