  8. Stories from youth league

I started coaching the local youth league this season. It's been interesting, fun and at times, frustrating. Here I will post the details of that weekends events.

As I'm making my way around the lanes watching as closely as I can, keeping an eye on those that have asked for help while watching those who haven't, for when they do.
There is a 12 year old boy named Josh. Quite the bowler really. He is small, naturally, but has a huge back swing a la Fagan with good speed and revs. ...

  10. Basic example of how to layout a ball

This is a basic example of how you layout a ball using a Dual Angle layout.
Tools used a Pro-Sect Quarter Scale and grease pencil.

    The Layout used is 45 X 3" X 30
    P.A.P. Location: 4 3/4" Horiz. 1" up Vertical (AKA: 4 3/4"> 1"^)
(The layout will look slightly different actually on a ball, this is just to show the differing parts of the layout.)

  11. Attacking a Flat Oil Pattern

Greetings! Has anyone else noticed that many tournaments and scratch leagues are putting out flat to reverse oil patterns out. These patterns are tough! An arrant shot to the right (speaking from a righties perspective) sends you skidding to a certain 2-10 split and a tugged shot puts you through the beak. Today's low rg/high diff equipment can only serve you well if you are brave enough to venture off your Zone 2 break point (7 board at approx. 40-45 feet). I am a tweener, bordering on power player, ...

  12. Bowling and the Art of War

Another find from my archive, my look at Applying the Art of War to bowling.

    "The Art Of Bowling"

Over two thousand years ago a Chinese warrior-philosopher named Sun-Tzu
wrote a book called The Art of War, it's a book on strategy that can
still be applied and used today and can be used in about any endeavor.

Here we'll look at two thing's: "strategic assessments" and "emptiness
    and fullness".

  13. To Spare Ball or Not To Spare Ball, That is The Question.

On bowlingboards there is a message thread that talks about the use of spare balls. I was part of the discussion there on using spare balls or not. I was taught at a young age not to try so much for a strike but to focus on picking up the spare. this meant changing my start position to allow my ball to curve back to pick up the spare or hit the pins just so to pick up the spare. With thinking about this topic, I decided to take my Brunswick Ambush(12lb) ball with me to my latest practice session. ...
  14. Lane Lovers Jubilee update (THREE-WAY TIE!!!)

What a great night of bowling for my team, Showtime. We were able to pull out three game win and also took the series total. It was a great night and we all were pretty much on point. I started out kind of rough but was able to get it together part way through the second game to finish with a strong first game. The first place team, Hot Mess, pulled out a complete sweep of Summer Cooler. The second place team, Pin and Tonics, bowled my team and we swept them. This caused them to drop out of ...
  15. Open(practice) Session

A few days ago I went and did some bowling. During this session I tried out some techniques that were mentioned on http://www.bowlingboards.com/forum.php. The first is two finger bowling. The second is tucking the pinky finger. I had never thought much about any of these things at all till I went to the above site and read a little about. After asking some questions about it, I still didn't understand it fully and felt the only way for a left handed bowler to under stand these things. It would ...

  17. Back to Bowling

My name is Jeff and bowling is my game. I have decided to start this blog for several reasons. The first is that I have been bowling ever since I was very young. My dad taught not only me, and my sister, but even got my grandfather into bowling back when he use to work part time at the local bowling alley. I took a 10 and a half year break due to serving in the US Coast Guard. Since getting out, I found that I have more free time than before. So I decided to get back into bowling. I joined ...
  18. How many of you have your own spinner to clean and polish your balls

I was thinking about getting my own, and was wondering which is the best for the price, and how many of you have your own.
Seems like it could save a person a lot of money in the long run! Plus might be fun to experiment with the different polish/sanding ect.

  19. In Search of 300

As you may have guessed from my delay in posting, it was another unsuccessful week in my goal for a 300 game. Of course, every bowler has an excuse for why they didn't do so well, and I am no exception haha. The lanes seemed a little wet dry this week seeing as how if I threw it too far out it wouldn't react, and if I missed a little inside it would go in high. I thought I was bowling on a house shot!! Anyway, the best game I could manage this week was a 204 which isn't really that bad considering ...

  20. In Search of 300

Well, things went alright this week, but I was nowhere near 300 at any time. I put together a respectable 607, but I was in between balls all night and never really felt comfortable throwing anything. The lanes confused me. I thought they were breaking down after the first game when really it was just the way I was throwing the ball. I know this because after using two balls the first two games and only managing a 193 and 191, I used one ball on both and pulled out a 223. "Trust is a must or ...

  22. In Seach of 300

Well, looks like I will be waiting another week. The first game looked promising starting with the front 4 strikes. Then in what can only be described as a momentary lapse of concentration, I fanned one really bad and it leaked into the gutter. I spared it up and struck again with the pure intent of throwing 270 with a gutter ball However, I pulled the next two shots and split in the 10th to turn a promising game into a humble 212. I had a case of the shanks the rest of the night managing a meager ...

  23. Bad backend problem fixed?

After last weeks horrific carry, decided to go with the Virtual Energy right out of the gate. Thought I was on 25-26, but it turns out I ended up on 29-30, probably the best pair. Tried my straight up 6 line, and this was solid from the start. There were quite a few of us playing a similar line, so I expected transition to occur much sooner than usual. To my surprise, I did not see any transition at all, and stuck with the same line the entire night. The last game was an adventure, starting with ...

  24. In Search of 300

278, 262, 268, 259... These scores seem to be my trend in the past few nights in my men's league. Ii just started getting serious about bowling two years ago when I bowled a 240 game with a 20 year old hand-me-down ball that wasn't even drilled for my hand. Since then I have added some newer hardware to my aresenal and I feel my first 300 game coming soon. However, I have been stuck in a rut where I can get anywhere between 9-11 out of 12 in a game but I can't seem to go all the way. I will be blogging ...

  25. Bad backends

Don't know where my last post went- I know I did my last entry about 2 weeks ago. In any event, just a summary of what happened last week. Had my usual arsenal and started as always with the NVS as has been the norm over the last 6-8 weeks. This ball is the earliest rolling of the three and should pick up the backends fairly early. It was evident that something was very different as the ball kept coming in flat no matter what angle of attack I chose. It was also curious that pins were tending to ...
