  1. Bowled a tourney Friday night :-(

I started out ok hitting a double out of the box followed by a missed 10 pin. That 10 pin my downfall. I couldn't double the rest of the game and ended with a 182. My best for the night.

One guy that I crossed with had a 244 the 1st game and was in 3rd place HDCP after the 1st and 2nd games. His last game was a 120 something and he fell out from cashng.Other than him, no one on my pair even came close to average. Another guy had won once and placed 2nd already this summer, only had ...

  2. League meeting results

Our league meeting was on Monday and not much got resolved. The meeting started 45 minutes late, 1/3 of the teams were not present and then half the members left because their league was starting. We had a motion on the floor to stay with the match points, increase the total points that can be won to 30 (my suggestion) and go to 3 12 week sessions vs. 2 halves and it didn't pass.

The weekly payouts were also shot down. People figured if you want to go into any pots, we already had ...

  3. Slaying the Monster

My trios team belongs to a league with no entering team cap average. Any team can join and some of them are basically super teams. My little modest 585 average team (league average is about 615) goes up against some teams who average 690, 675, 665 and so on. The 690 team is spotting us around 90+ pins.

Even at those handicap pin numbers, trying to defeat a super team can be difficult to overcome when you see then throw strike after strike. But that's just all in your head. Is your ...

  4. Cleaning your equipment

Due to the absorbtion rate of today's bowling ball resins, it's imperative to clean your equipment after each set. If you have access to a spinner, you can clean the balls even better.

Try to use an approved cleanser that can be found on the USBC's website. There are many different cleanser's from various manufactorers on the market. Try to pick a trusted name. I myself use Ultimate's Black Magic. Spray it on the ball and use a microfiber rag to wipe down dry. This will help keep ...

  5. Building an arsenal. How much is too much?

I subscribe to many bowling forums and I've noticed that some people have an 7-8 ball arsenal. They never use more than 3 or 4 balls anyway so why bring so many? I myself have never seen anyone bring more than 6 balls to a league or tourney but just how many balls is enough?

If you bowl in the same league every week, you really only need 2 or 3 balls to bring. The lanes usually play the same week to week. You'll bring a ball that works well on that pattern and a ball that fits better ...

  6. Preventing injuries while bowling

For anyone who bowls preventing injuries should always be on all bowlers minds as they walk into an alley. I see bowlers who will lace up and then sit down until shadow play begins and then toss the ball down the lane as if he's already played 3 games. This is how injuries can occur.

I have a small but so far effective routine prior to bowling. I first will stretch my back and legs. Deep knee bends work great on the legs. For me, those are the most troublesome areas. I then will ...

  7. PBA exemption. Is it worth it?

There is a very, very good bowler from my county that has been a PBA exempt is the past. He won his exemption through the regional program, he took a leave of absence from a good job and went out on he tour for 7-8 months.

This player does have a PBA title from the early '90's and knows what being on tour is all about but on the exempt tour, he didn't do well at all and lost his exempt status for the following year.

So he goes back to the regionals and guess what. ...

  8. What has your house done for YOU lately?

My house is always looking for ways to attract and keep bowlers. With about 4 houses within a 10 mile radius, my center has to keep on looking for new ways to to compete with them.

In the last 4 years we have new synthetic lanes, pin decks and gutters. We also have new ball returns and a new state of the art Kegel oil machine.

While all the above things were needed to keep the league bowler the owner has also implemented ways to get the casual open bowling to visit ...

  9. Summertime Blues

As we get into the dog days of August and as September nears, people start getting prepared for school. My wife and I are getting school supplies and shopping for new clothes for kids, getting my eldest signed up for his 1st year of college. Also making out our schedules of who's driving who where and what days to take off when there is no school.

So as that's all getting done there's some planning of my own going on and that's setting up my fall arsenal and getting my team together. ...

  10. New league format ideas

Our competitive match point trios league is trying to attract more bowlers. Up for vote this month is the Peterson Point System (PPS). The PPS is different because there are no match points to be won and the points you and your team earn carry over every week. This system works really well because every single pin counts during the season and virtually eliminates sandbagging.

When you bowl in a PPS, you bowl againist the whole league, not just one team every week. For every 50 pins ...
